On Monday night Middletown City Schools Board of Education made a new move that is designed to save the district thousands of dollars in technology costs. The board met at the Rosa Parks Elementary School. They accepted an Apple Computer contract amendment that would pay around $97,581 in interest for the district’s computer rentals through 2013.
In an interview with Danielle Wilson from the Middletown Journal the Treasurer Lisa Fahncke said the interest was reduced from around $120,000 that the district would have paid that was in addition to the principal of $478,000 that was in a previous draft of the agreement. The contract would be a two-year extension of the four-year lease the board heard in March. Fahncke recommends paying the interest up front and accepting the more than $22,000 in savings that is offered by Apple.
This contract covers 330 13-inch MacBook laptops, 112 iMac computers and accessories and an equal number of protection plans for each computer. Along with that it will include 22 computer airports for the machines. Fahncke also told Wilson that during the course of the contract the board may opt to place a levy on the ballot. If the levy would fail Apple would back the district on its principal but not the interest. They could not guarantee the interest due to the fact that it is backed by another company.
