There will soon be construction on Dixie Highway near the Towne Mall area. On Tuesday, March 3rd Middletown City Council authorized City Manager Judy Gilleland to enter a contract with Brumbaugh Construction Inc. of Arcanum. This will be to replace the bridge over Dicks Creek which is just south of Towne Boulevard.
The bridge was originally built in 1936 and had improvements made to it in 1977 to accommodate a right turn lane on to Towne Boulevard. The city’s Engineering Division has said that the bridge has substantially deteriorated over the years and is in need of replacement. There is also a weight restriction on the bridge.
At one time many years ago the bridge became eligible for federal funding. The replacement bridge would be wider so that it could accommodate five lanes of traffic with increased pedestrian and shoulder areas for better safety. The cost for the bridge will be $649,433 with $129,886 or 20 percent of the costs coming as the city’s share that has been budgeted as part of the 2009 Capital Improvement Plan.
