Today marks the day when Middletown Regional Hospital staff begins the move from the McKnight Drive facilities that the hospital has operated on since 1917 to the newly built $195 million dollar Atrium Medical Center at the eastern edge of the city.
Moving an entire hospital 3 miles across the city is no easy task. 'Health Care Relocations', a Canadian company specializing in this specific type of operation, is spearheading the massive logistical effort over the next 12 days to move machinery and equipment, medical records, and ultimately on the 9th of December patients to the new facilities.
A virtual 'fleet' of ambulances will be used to transport patients from Middletown Regional to Atrium Medical on the 9th, moving every patient except those in the Intensive Care Unit. The ICU patients will remain at Middletown Regional until such time as they are stabilized enough to be moved.
