2006 continues to be a record-breaking year for Light Up Middletown, now in its eighth season. The drive-through, animated light display in downtown Middletown’s Smith Park, is drawing record crowds. So far, the 2006 attendance figures are running 21% above the 2005 figures. Through December 14, there have been 29,636 people touring the displays of leaping deer, penguins, floating swans and thousands of twinkling lights in 8,786 vehicles including 14 buses.
The exhibit is open every evening, 5:30 – 9:30 pm regardless of weather, including holidays through New Year’s Eve. Santa and Mrs. Claus appear on Friday and Saturday evenings until Christmas. Costumed characters appear several evenings during the season.
Light Up Middletown is a non-profit organization raising funds for Middletown park improvements and is run totally by volunteers. The Light Up committee shares some of the donations with other non-profit organizations whose members serve as greeters at the gate each evening.
Those who visit Light Up Middletown are asked to make a cash donation as their admission fee. Event organizers ask that each guest drop a dollar or two in the donation box. No specific amount is required but they ask that everyone contribute something to help cover the costs.
