A new expansion of national community service programs could make funding available to local organizations. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown told Ed Richter of the Middletown Journal that he supports the Serve America Act that will go to a vote next week because “community service is more important than ever during tough economic times. This bill would allow more Ohioans to help their neighbors who are struggling to obtain health care, afford energy costs or feed their families.”
This would encourage many people from Ohio from all ages to invest in their communities and their country. Brown in particularly cited the efforts of Mark Rembert and Taylor Stuckert co-foundersand directors of Energize Clinton County which is a nonprofit organization in Wilmington. They are both young men that were to return to their hometown rather than serving abroad to help address the needs of a community that is experiencing economic challenges as a result of DHL’s decision to exit the U.S. market.
Brown also told Richter that during a conference call that similar legislation is being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives. The provisions will be. An increase of 175,000 positions in AmeriCorps. Boost to the number of service opportunities through new programs such as Youth Engagement Zones in low-income, high need communities. There was not yet an estimate of the cost for this proposal. It was made possible for local groups to apply on a competitive basis to the Corporation for National Service for funding.
