Local production company teams with actor Martin Sheen
Monday, July 21, 2008 4:37:03 PM - Middletown Ohio

by Don Rumford

Local video production company Rumford Productions has released a three minute Public Service Announcement (PSA) for the Good Samaritan Homeless Clinic in Dayton Ohio featuring actor Martin Sheen.

It was a little good luck and the good will of Mr. Sheen Don Rumford said.  Don and Deborah Rumford met the Director of the Samaritan Homeless Clinic, Judith Barr, while producing Health Care Heroes for the Dayton Business Journal in 2006.

The couple hit it off immediately with Judith and eventually offered to sponsor a video for fund raising purposes for the clinic.  The Rumford’s were invited to spend Fathers Day 2007 at the clinic in Dayton when actor Martin Sheen made a surprise visit.

Martin Sheen has been a long time advocate of solutions for the homeless and has worked tirelessly in their support.  He spent at least ten to fifteen minutes with each staff member and really gave a lot of his time to those at the clinic.  Deborah and I had always thought he was a great actor but we were more impressed with how much of himself he gave that day, a holiday to boot Rumford said.

We asked Judith about having Mr. Sheen do the voice over for the video project said Rumford.  Mr. Sheen immediately agreed to do the video free of charge providing proper waivers from the Screen Actors Guild could be obtained.  Rumford Productions negotiated with SAG and found that only the PSA contract could be used for this purpose which meant the five minute version would need to be cut to three minutes in order to conform with the contract.  This caused us to really consolidate the content of the script but we all believe we got the most information in the time allowed Rumford said.  There were over six thousand people suffering from homelessness in Montgomery county alone in 2007 and the national numbers are even more staggering.  Over three and a half million people are considered homeless in the United States today.  We define homelessness as people who don’t have permanent housing and move from shelter to shelter each day.

Our script was refined and sent to Mr. Sheen for recording in a Los Angeles studio who then forwarded the files to our post production studio in Middletown.  It was a real treat hearing the famous actor do his lines multiple different ways Rumford said.  He did a wonderful job and even let us use a couple scenes from the clinic visit towards the end of the video.

The video can be seen in a higher bandwidth version here.

The PSA will start airing on Dayton area television stations beginning in early August.  Mr. Sheen is a native of Dayton Ohio where family members still live and he frequently visits the area.  He refers to himself as the “acting” president having played the role on the West Wing for several years.
