The “necessary evil” is what the faculty and staff at Miami University calls the 200 job cuts planned to help shore up Miami University’s finances. The university is hoping to have more to the plan. It will be reaching a $22 million budget deficit by the end of March.
The officials at Miami are estimating that half of the 20 cuts will come from positions left vacant during an ongoing hiring freeze and a retirement incentive offered to staff. The incentive will offer up to 100 workers eligible to retire $10,000 if they would go then. The other 100 cuts will most likely come from layoffs across the different departments in Oxford, Hamilton, and Middletown campuses. The cuts don’t include faculty positions.
The goal is to where students see very little change. They are working to balance the cuts so the long-term goals are not hurt and the educational experience and opportunities are not affected. With the layoffs looming the staff interviewed as they walked around the Shriver Center on MU’s Oxford campus on Wednesday, February 18th. The students expressed their anxiety as they awaited further details.
The university has been very helpful during the process. They delegate with each department about which positions to cut and listening to all suggestions.
