Starting next week there will be seventy-three Miami University employees that will be informed that their jobs will be eliminated as the university scales back 216 positions between the campuses. There will be a total of 216 classified and unclassified positions that will be eliminated and Miami will cut its $22 million budget deficit.
Out of 216 positions 143 of them are currently vacant. This budget reduction is being done from the current challenging economic situation the nation, state, and Miami face today. The university officials did not say how much the cuts would save or give details about what jobs were being eliminated.
A total of sixty-four positions will be cut at the Oxford campus. There will not be any cuts at the Hamilton campus. And nine will be eliminated from the Middletown campus however one of the positions is currently vacant. The employees will be getting informed on Wednesday, March 4th. The positions being cut were not based on employee performance but rather if the job was needed at the university or not.
The number of positions that are being eliminated was determined based on the university budget and what money would be included in the stimulus package and the governor’s budget. The classified employees will be staying on until June 27th and unclassified employees until June 30th. Employees that have more than five years will be given extra time. The employees also receive one year extension of free tuition at Miami and receive other placement and training services.
