The Middletown High School girls diving team has had a good start to their diving season this year. This is the first time in eight years that the Middies have had a girls diving team. The team consists of two juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman.
Three of the girls are first-time competitive divers. Emma Marcum, a freshman, has competed for her summer club team for two years. At the Milford Invitational, their first competition, three of the girls placed in the top 14.
Keri Sennett, the girls coach, believes that this is the best group of girls she has coached. Sennett was a diver for Middletown in the mid-1980s and is the assistant coach for Lakota East and Lakota West high schools.
At the beginning of the school year the girls talked to Athletic Director Gary Lebo to try and get a diving team started. Sennett began teaching the basics of diving at the first practice held right before Christmas break. That was a late start considering most teams started practicing in early November.
During the divers’ regular season they will perform six dives and in the postseason they will need 11 dives. The girls are hoping that more girls will want to try out for next season’s team.
