Middletown City council host Conversations with council June 30, 2009

City manager Gilleland Along With Council Members Ford And Armbruster At Douglass Park
Photo And Story By: Randy Lewis

At 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 30, 2009 at the Manchester Inn & Conference Center at 1027 Manchester Ave in Middletown, City Council Members James Armbruster from the First Ward and Leslie Ford from the Second Ward will be joining together for a Conversation with Council - a time for residents to bring their concerns to the table.

Mr. Armbuster and Mrs. Ford are both running for reelection this November. Armbuster may very well be representing the First Ward again as there is no one opposing him at this time. Mrs. Ford will be running against John P. Soppanish of 1110 Lafayette Ave and Andrew Smith Jr. of 601 Sixteenth Avenue.

Prior to January 1, 1994, the City Council was composed of five members. Today there are seven members, all residents of the City. Two members of Council serve as "at large" members and are voted upon by all qualified electors of the City. Four of the members serve "by ward" and are voted upon only by the qualified electors of the ward in which they live. The City Council members are required to meet at least twice a month. They meet in the City Council Chambers, in the City Building and the meetings are open to the public.

These meetings are also taped and televised on TV Middletown (Channel 24) on Tuesday evenings. The compensation of the members of the City Council is $5,000 per year. The Mayor's compensation is $9,000 per year.

This comment is intended to Anita Scott Jones: You did an excellent job during the meeting to have a comment on every subject. Your knowledge and understanding about everthing is really overwhelming. It is evident this experience & knowledge was gained through your day job. The city is very fortunate. Unfortunately, you have a significant area of improvement to become more effective. You must become open minded and not defensive on every subject that does not support your agenda. Also, please try to be on time for the meetings, it is not right the membership waits on your arrival. We need your input from the begining of the meeting, it is worrysome that you miss any part of the meeting where your opinion can be heard. Thank you Anita Scott Jones, your involvment have given a new perspective to these meetings. You are the queen of the meeting.

Bill given that these people all have other jobs and are not paid a full time salary by the City to be on Council, it is hard to demand that they always be on time when working for someone else. If they were all self-employed it would be a different story but some are not, so the fact that they arrive late a few times is understandable and should not be criticized.
