MIDDLETOWN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

                                     NEWS RELEASE

$185,000 Awarded by MCF at Annual Meeting

NOVEMBER 9, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: T. DUANE GORDON 513-424-7369 (Cell: 513-593-4860)

The Middletown Community Foundation took the occasion of its Annual Meeting on Nov. 5 to announce its quarterly grant awards, which for the final period of 2009 totaled $185,000.

Executive Director T. Duane Gordon revealed a total of 19 applications in the areas of arts, festivals, recreation, community development and capital requests were approved ranging from a new roof for the Middletown Arts Center and automatic defibrillators being installed in public places by The Christ Hospital to sponsorship of TV Middletown's city holiday parade and winterization of the Franklin Area Historical Society's museums.

Representatives from organizations receiving some of the larger grants, including Abilities First, Madison Township and the City of Middletown, were surprised by being called on stage to learn of the result of their requests and be handed the actual checks to fund their projects.

The next deadline for applications is Dec. 1 in the areas of human needs and quality education. Applications and guidelines are available at www.mcfoundation.org, and all potential applicants are encouraged to watch a tutorial video on the website providing step-by-step instructions on submission of a funding request. Those requests will be considered in January for early February 2010 disbursement.

The grants awarded for the fourth quarter are:

Abilities First $23,000 to replace two air compressors and a boiler in the HVAC system and repair and reseal a parking lot that has drainage problems causing dangerous ice to accumulate in winter.

Art Central Foundation $3,000 to sponsor the Main Street Art and Music Festival for the third year in a row.

Central Academy PTO $3,000 for park benches at Rosedale Park adjacent to the school.

The Christ Hospital $9,000 to place three automatic defibrillators in public places throughout the greater Middletown area.

The Franklin Area Historical Society $2,837.50 to help winterize its two museum locations to lower its heating bills.

First United Methodist Church of Middletown $5,000 to sponsor for the fourth year in a row the First Fridays Downtown Concert Series presented by the church with free admission.

Friends of Chisolm $10,000 to assist with construction of a composting restroom at the historic home site that is part of Butler Metro Parks south of Trenton .

Great Miami Valley YMCA $1,000 to help make tickets available to area youth to attend its character dinner next month.

Historical Society of Madison Township $1,938 to provide for the re-erection of an historic log cabin that had been dismantled from a farm and moved to a township park.

Madison Township $25,000 for materials to build a 34-by-50-foot shelter at a new township park using city personnel labor.

Middletown Arts Center $50,000 toward the $120,000 project of replacing the building’s aging roof.

City of Middletown $2,000 to install flagpoles with state and city flags at Governor’s Square Park adjacent to the flagpole with the American flag recently donated for the park.

City of Middletown $21,450 for the carillon in Donham Plaza to replace the control system destroyed by a lightning strike earlier this spring.

Optimist Club of Monroe $2,000 to help with the city’s holiday celebration.

People Working Cooperatively $10,000 to provide emergency home repairs for low-income Middletown residents.

Sorg Opera Company $1,000 to sponsor its annual kinderconcert holiday performance.

Supports to Encourage Low Income Families (S.E.L.F.) $7,000 to support for a second year individual development accounts to help train low income families in financial literacy and assist them in saving toward one of four specific approved purchases.

TV Middletown $2,000 for the Middletown city holiday parade.

Youth Opportunities Unlimited $5,000 to support for its after-school tutoring and enrichment programs for children in the 14th Avenue neighborhoods.

Gordon also discussed at the Annual Meeting, although it had been previously announced a few weeks prior, a special $50,000 grant awarded to Miami University Middletown to support the creation of a Community Building Institute (CBI) modeled after the CBI at Xavier University that has spent the past year in Middletown working with residents on the western end of the city as part of the United Way's Place Matters initiative.

He explained that the initial responsibilities of the Middletown CBI will be to implement the resident-driven plans created as part of Place Matters in the Douglass Park, Downtown, and Damon Park/Amanda neighborhoods as well as shepherding the implementation of a downtown development plan commissioned by the city in response to conversations facilitated over the past year by the Middletown Community Foundation following the economic development field trip to Paducah, Ky., that was sponsored by the Foundation last year.

Charities, schools and governmental entities in Middletown, Monroe, Trenton, Franklin, Lemon Township and Madison Township may apply for funding from the Middletown Community Foundation. Applications are not considered for grants for individuals, general operating support, non 501(c)(3) organizations, national organizations, religious purposes, political groups, endowments or medical organizations.

The Middletown Community Foundation works to improve the lives of those in the greater Middletown area by serving as a permanent source of funding for projects to benefit the community. Founded in 1976 as part of the Middletown United Way, the Community Foundation became an independent organization in 1986 and over the past 33 years has distributed tens of millions of dollars to charitable organizations in the area, with more than $20 million granted out in the past 10 years alone. Why in the world does the Greater Miami YMCA need $1,000 to help make tickets available for youth to attend their dinner. Why not simply make them their guests? Need more explanation please.
