This fall there will be an alternative for Middletown High School freshmen students who would benefit more from personal attention. The students would be able to attend the new Freshmen Academy. The meeting night for the freshmen interested is April 20th. There will only be 60 chose the first year of the program. The program offers career mapping, mentoring with teachers and a more flexible schedule with allows for more focus on specific areas such as reading.
The senior director of learning said this program will dive into and really address the needs, the specific needs of the students with an interview with Meagan Engle of the Middletown Journal. It will help students who are not connected with the traditional school setting. The Freshmen Academy will be located in the Manchester building that is close to the high school and will offer smaller class sizes hands on and computer assisted learning, educational field trips and motivational seminars.
The starting cost is going to be mainly covered by grants. There will be two teachers hired which will cost the district around $100,000. That will be covered if there are 20 students who graduate high school from the program. The goal of the program is to make sure the students have enough credits so when they finish the year to qualify as a sophomore they make progress towards passing the Ohio Graduation Test.
