Middletown Journal Wins 8 State Awards |

The Middletown Journal had won several awards in the Associated Press Society of Ohio’s annual contest. The contest was held on May 3rd. Skip Weaver a staff writer for the journal took first place for Best Sports Enterprise where he reported for a series of articles on the search for a new football coach at Middletown High School. The series had looked at the district’s process which included the community’s input and had involved an in-depth look at each of the five finalists.
There were a total of eight awards won for the journal. The staff photographer Nick Graham and staff writer Jessica Heffner had both won second place awards. The awards Graham received were in the categories for Best Spot News Photo Essay and Heffner’s award was in the Best Business Writer category.
Overall the Middletown Journal was awarded third place in the Best Web Site category. Gary Stelzer who is a staff photographer earned two third place awards for Best Photographer and Best Spot News Photo. The members of the AP include 88 daily newspapers in Ohio. There were sixty-six daily newspapers that submitted 2,908 entries in the contest that featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2008.
