The leaders at Middletown schools are making changes to create a more equal opportunity in sports for female students. They did a volunteer study of its sports programs and the district found some disparity in athletics for male and female students. The study examined the district’s compliance with Title IX which is an educational amendment focused on banning gender discrimination in schools mainly focusing on opportunities for woman.
The review focused on sports historically and currently offered, facilities for male and female sports and coaches. Lisa Lowery announced that the district is overall in very good shape. Most of the issues found are minor and can easily be corrected.
There are a slightly lower percentage of female students participating in sports 49.02 percent to 50.98 percent. The difference is 12 females which is enough for an additional sport at the high school. A survey that was done by high school students found that more female students expressed interest in playing sports than the number that actually played.
The study suggests the district to add a sport for female students. The female students said they would like the school to offer activities like lacrosse, dancing and gymnastics. It also suggests adding sports in elementary schools to grow interest early. Superintendent announced that he will give an update in March on the improvements made and how to proceed with more costly items.
