Nancy Nix endorses Marcia Andrew for School BD
Thursday, October 27, 2005 3:22:34 PM - Middletown Ohio

RE: Marcia Andrew, candidate for the Middletown School District Board of Education.

From Nancy Nix:
I've known Will and Marcia for several years and feel Marcia would be a great addition to the board. Marcia is a practicing attorney, and she and Will have three children in Middletown public schools.

MARCIA ANDREW for  SCHOOL BOARD

  New Voice.  New Ideas.

Professional:   »Partner, law firm of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister, LLP
   »17 years as commercial litigator
   »Experience making tough decisions after careful research and review of the     facts, and negotiating solutions to difficult situations.

Education:  1980 Graduate of Pelham Memorial High School, Pelham, N.Y.
   1984 B.A., cum laude, Williams College
   1988 J.D., University of Virginia School of Law, Order of the Coif

Personal:   Married to William Andrew, M.D. (Hilltop OB/GYN)
   Three children, ages 11, 10 and 8, attend Central Academy

Community  »Exec. Board of Central Academy’s PTO as Co-Chair Student Liaison Comm.
Service:     »Board of Trustees of non-profit LADD (Living Arrangements for         Developmentally Disabled), 1999-2005

New Ideas:  Offer more choices within the public school system, including:

   »expand Central Academy to 7th and 8th grades, as an alternative to one large     middle school (the proposed combined middle school will have 1650 students in grades 6-8);

*The school district has already committed to this proposal, at my initiative!

   »create a smaller pilot high school within the new high school, to be focused     around a theme, such as science and technology or creative and performing arts;

   »separate the 9th graders in their own wing or school for more support during a     stressful transition;

   »reach out to at-risk middle school students with an intensive summer program,     taught primarily by high school and college students.

   Smaller schools and creative programs will fight the flight to charter      schools, lower the dropout rate, and increase student performance.

   »Re-start the STARS program – everyone benefits when our senior citizens     volunteer one-on-one with students.

   »Put Central Academy in the new elementary building on Miller Road, and allow     Rosedale to stay at its current neighborhood site in a renovated and expanded building.
