Members of the public and health care professionals can learn about advancements in cancer screening, treatment and research at the second annual symposium featuring perspective from local and national cancer physicians.
The free event, “Collaborating Against Cancer,” will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth St. Physicians and other health care providers will share detailed information about advances in cancer care to patients, families and the general public in language that’s understandable for consumers. The conference will also include separate sessions on recent cancer findings for doctors and other clinicians.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and six-time champion, will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. He was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), lost his grandfather and uncle to colorectal cancer, and it nearly took the life of his father. As a carrier of the gene, Abdul-Jabbar promotes colorectal cancer awareness for the African-American community.
Premier Health’s affiliation with MD Anderson Cancer Network has enhanced cancer care locally with greater access to expertise from MD Anderson Cancer Center, the nation’s leading cancer center. With access to peer-to-peer consultations, quality care assurances and protocols from MD Anderson, Premier Health is bringing nationally recognized best practices close to home for patients in this region.
“Cancer is something that touches almost all of us, and this symposium is an excellent way to learn firsthand about exciting advances in cancer prevention, screenings, treatment and care,” said Charles Bane, MD, chair of the Premier Health Cancer Institute. “It’s yet another example of our high level of cancer expertise in this region.”
