Senator Barry Levey to Fund Let's Read Together Baby Book Program |
Friday, September 12, 2003 8:43:45 AM - Middletown Ohio |
Retired State Senator Barry Levey has come to the rescue of the pre-school literacy program called Let’s Read Together. The committee had been giving books to young children in the Middletown City School District in an effort to help children begin Kindergarten more ready to learn to read. Educators know that children who have been exposed to books and have been read to at an early age tend to do much better when they reach the classroom than those with no such exposure.
Senator Levey will keep the books-for-babies program going with a donation of $5,000, the amount needed to purchase the soft, sturdy books given to each baby born at Middletown Regional Hospital during a twelve month period. His long-time support for early childhood learning has included many personal efforts including participation in Right to Read Week programs and similar projects. Ann Mort, chair of the Let’s Read Together committee said, “His phone call was totally unexpected but very much appreciated and typical of the things Senator Levey and his family have always done for this community. The Senator has stepped up to help many programs and events that I personally know of and, I’d imagine, many more that I know nothing about. He is truly a treaure in this community and sets an example we can all follow in giving to things that we find important to help our neighbors in ways that we can.”
