Source Of Nitrogen Leak Identified
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 11:20:17 AM - Middletown Ohio

May 19, 2010
For immediate release
Contact: City Law Director Les Landen, 513-425-7993, cell 513-267-8458

Today, experts identified the source of the nitrogen gas that evacuated oxygen from the worksite where City of
Middletown worker Jabin Lakes died and three fire fighters were injured on May 7. Leaks have been detected in
nitrogen lines running from Air Products & Chemicals to AK Steel Corporation. These lines are being carefully excavated
at this time.

A hydro-excavation process is being used to dig out the lines. This process utilizes water rather than heavy equipment so
as not to damage the lines further or damage any of the other underground pipelines or electrical lines at the excavation
site. Options for repair are currently being evaluated. Upon completion of the excavation and examination of the
nitrogen lines necessary repairs will be undertaken. Once the repairs are finalized, testing will begin to verify that all
leaks have been found and remediated. Further testing will be conducted to assure that the source of nitrogen has been
fully identified and resolved.

Yankee Road, from Lafayette to Pershing, will remain closed to traffic.

So--businesses north and south of the Yankee Rd.sewer/pipeline site are now pretty much cut off from their customers, with no convenient detour. City wasted two weeks b4 getting down to the proper investigation, after all initial statements and findings proved to be erroneous. Shouldn't Air Products and AK be liable for the unfortunate aftermath of the poorly functioning(and extremely dangerous) undertaking? Just how long will this traffic area be shut down? Economic Development visits/statements? None. Council/Admin statements/visits? None. Too busy with their meeting stand-offs and non-accomplishments.

Agreed Spider! What's worse is the fact that those Lines could have been completely turned off and made it safe for the Public. AK does need the Nitrogen, but AP could have provided Tankers of Liquid Nitrogen to fill the need. However that would had been expensive. Thus! R&D Auto Parts and Save a Lot Grocery both suffered great loses as thier Customers were cut and unable to patronize the Businesses. Those Businesses,in effect, took a hit to save AK money.

I myself have not been to SAL on South U since the closing.

well--the inspectors haven't worked in 2 1/2 day, and won't be back until Tuesday at the earliest. The roadway is clear and functional, yet no citizen traffic will be permitted until further notice, and the small area is manned 24/7 by local police. The roadway is open to AK and Air Products traffic(though their property hosts the contamination sources). Seems their areas would be the most dangerous. Would have been very simple and convenient to open this street for citizen traffic during the holiday weekend.

Once again, "Business friendly" is little more than a catchy buzz phrase in Middletown. Well--city Admin started bugging out Friday or earlier, and won't return to work until Tuesday at the earliest. Another poorly co-ordinated effort(or lack of) by the city.
