Update to City Council December 12, 2008
Wednesday, December 17, 2008 11:40:14 AM - Middletown Ohio
Weekly Update to City Council
from the City Manager
December 12, 2008

Fire Retirement
Fire Captain Dick Rainey retires from the Middletown Division of Fire December
31, 2008. This will mark the end of almost 30 years of distinguished service. Dick
hired on with the division May 14, 1979, promoted to Lieutenant May 15, 1991
and Captain July 21, 1993. Through these almost three decades he has given
greatly to the fire service and the community of Middletown. We wish him a
long and healthy retirement…he will be missed.

Deer Population
It is a dangerous time of year for driving with the amount of deer around. We
have had requests for the city to take measures to thin out the deer population.
I am not inclined to take any action at this time due to the potential issues that
come with thinning out the deer population. This issue comes up in many cities
during this time of year. Obviously we want to be extremely careful if we pursue
such a project. We have been in contact with ODNR for advice. Bow hunting
seems to be the best option if we choose to do anything. A few entities have
had sharp shooters from ODNR assist them.
In excess of 500 New Jobs added with East End Development
To date, with the new development already underway, we anticipate in excess
of 500 NEW jobs in the Renaissance District.

Employee Holiday Luncheon
We had a great Employee Luncheon on Friday; it was well attended and
enjoyed by all. We appreciate the opportunity to get all of the employees
together to share the fellowship and celebrate the holidays.

Section 8 Vendor
The committee appointed to provide a recommendation regarding a Section 8
vendor is recommending, by a vote of 7-2, that the city contract with CGI to run
the program. We will need to begin negotiations in the near future to meet our
February deadline and will be seeking council approval for commencement of
negotiations on Tuesday. There are a couple of outstanding questions that our
consultant is working on prior to Tuesday.
