Weekly Update to City Council from the City Manager
February 16, 2009 Senator Voinovich Visit We have been busy making plans for the Senator’s visit. We are honored that he has chosen Middletown to visit and I believe that we have a great story to share with him. While the focus of the visit will be the Neighborhood Stablization Program, on which he worked very hard, he will also want to know of the other challenges we face as a community.
Also, the Senator worked with the USEPA on their decision to support the Sun Coke permit. Council members may want to extend thanks for his support on this very important regional project as well.
Middletown-Hamilton bus connection A very exciting first step that has many uses for residents who require access to social services and jobs. The connector will be provided at no cost to Middletown, thanks to the efforts of our staff and the Butler County RTA – a great example of regional cooperation. We will have the first reading on Tuesday.
Apprehension of Murder Suspect Thank you to the police personnel for their dedicated hard work in apprehending the murder suspect very quickly and without incident.
Weatherwax Golf Course is a community asset I would like to assure golf course employees and the community alike, that our discussion during the Council Finance Sub Committee was centered around the fact that Weatherwax is a community asset that we want to protect, but acknowledging that there has been a deficit in recent years. The deficit in 2008 was about $220,000. It is good management to discuss the issues and talk about options for the future. The golf course is fully funded for 2009. We have great employees who care a great deal about the course; the funding issues are simply a sign of the times. Agenda 2009 Priorities Top 5 priorities from our council retreat include: Fiscal Prudence, Section 8, Economic Development, Street Improvement, Socio-Economic Balance.
Section 8 We had a productive first meeting last week with CONSOC on our new contract. I made it clear that we were desirous of negotiating a contract and that we needed to move forward. Further, we discussed the possibility of not coming to terms after a couple of sessions and potential methods for resolution. While I do not anticipate any issues during negotiations, I will keep council advised. A second meeting is planned for later this week.
