AP - Eight American troops died in attacks in southern Afghanistan, including a car bombing and gunfight outside a police compound in Kandahar, officials said Wednesday as the Taliban push back against a coalition effort to secure the volatile region.

Someone remind me again what we are still doing there and wasting lives and billions of dollars?  Nine years after arriving, other than killing scores of Taliban, is anything better?  Does anyone believe a sophisticated Al-Queda presence is still there?

The country is so backward, so tribal, so unsalvageable, there is no point in us wasting anymore lives or $$ there.  We don't "owe" that country our modernized ways, development, or financial support.  Let's get the hell out of there.  If more "terrorist camps" develop then we fly in a bomb them.  Short of that, I have no interest in helping that country go one step forward followed by three steps back.

Bill- we set up camp in their country. Every night on the news, we hear our soldiers say they can't tell the enemy from the non-combative population. We see roadside bombs taking out vehicles and lives. The soldiers go out on patrol and have firefights and take body counts and we hear the numbers of Al-Quaida and our own troops killed or wounded every night on the evening news. Some troops say they don't know what they are over there for. We see flag-drapped coffins and funerals in towns across the country and at Arlington Cemetery. We are on the 9th year at war in that region. We are training the Iraqui and Afghanistan people and army's to "stand on their own two feet", knowing that as soon as we leave, they will drop their weapons and filter back into the populace in an attempt to avoid being killed by the Taliban after we're gone. And..... in a few years after we wind this up, we will build a wall to honor our dead in a war that became less and less popular with the public as time went on.

Sounds to me like the war that was fought in Nam to a tee. We never learn and have allowed our dam politicians to start another one just like the first one. We are fools for the lousy leaders of this country. JMO    Meet the new war....same as the old war. Some of us have learned that this scenario will never work.

Afghanistan sounds awfully familar don't it Vet ?

This type of war is very profitable. People are making some serious bucks off playing war over there playing with the lives of our men and women. It's pretty much the American War Machine cranking out dollars. I for one don't believe a word the media or politicians say about it because we've been duped to many times and given to many reasons for this war or that war. And you can't win a war against "religion" and thats what we are fighting, besides making money. This crap about Bin Laden is no doubt all political bull slinging. We can send people to the space station and back but we can't find a rag head living in a cave ??!!! Give me a break !!

the reason that we are still their is the UNITED NATION SETS THE POLICY FOR WAR AND WONT LET US  GO IN AND BOMB THEM AND LEAVE.  The biggist loss this country ever took was the day we ageed to let other countries in the U.N. tell us how fight a war after we were attacked.  We have lost more good soilders than we sould have ,time for us not to worry about what the rest of the world thinks about us. They are just using that against us.

Bocephus, I believe they talked about pulling out of Iraq.  I don't think Afgh'stan exit was talked about much during campaigning.  Actually, it was used as a Bush bashing weapon because the line was "we need to leave Iraq because the real battle is in Afghanistan".

In reality we need to get out of both.  Obama dare not do it because the GOP would be all over him for being "soft" and settling for less than "Victory"...whatever the hell that is.

Afghanistan is a perpetual war,it will be going on 20 years from now.

The war machine will use the excuse of hunting down terrorist as a way to keep dupping the people into keeping the war going. They've already said that a terrorist attack is imminent for October of this year. A good election year ploy and a crock of crap.
