Great news for Middletown. The town needs to motivate companies such as Magellan to locate here. Defense supply contracting companies could offer the people of Middletown opportunities to upgrade their standards of living as opposed to the job selections we now have. The armor company in Fairfield is another example of using defense contract companies as economic motivators for the community. Fairfield is fortunate to have them. The economic development director needs to focus more on this area than on bringing low paying retail into town. This is a start. Now, let's build on this theme for employment for future jobs. Forget retail for now- that will come later AFTER the decent jobs are established.

Vet the problem is Middletown has forgotten retail for far to long as it is.  You lose retail and people develope other shopping habits which are out of the area and this is not good for the city at all.  There is no reason why Retail and Job expansion can't be handled at the same time.  Middletown needs to be more agressive in both areas.

I understand the reasoning behind your statements Pacman and yes, I agree that the development should be done similtaneously. I was thinking that you could bring as much retail into Middletown as you wanted, but if the jobs that Middletown offers, produce no extra disposable income(besides paying for the basics), the people won't be able to shop those "outside the basics" stores and they will go out of business. Case in point- Dillards. I would venture to say that the majority of people in Middletown don't have the extra money from the paycheck to support shopping at an "upscale" place like Dillards. This town's paychecks will only support the "Wal-Mart prices" for the most part and the income for many people here will only support basics like groceries and gas along with the mortgage and car payment.For some, there is no money beyond that, until the next paycheck when they do it all over again. Raise the earning power of people and they will have that extra cash to spend in those "non-basic" stores. Just another way of approach I guess.

That is great news.

I agree with the above comments that an increase in quality manufacturing, medical, or high tech jobs, is needed to support the retail that we have. Many of the shops that are now closing were opened a decade or two ago when there were a lot more manufacturing jobs in the area.

In addition to needing more retail in Middletown, there has to be a way to communicate to those living here that the retail here is as good as those in other close-by cities.
