It would appear that about 5-7% of the student population is looking to go elsewhere next year.  Lets say 350 students go to other schools districts and private schools, that would mean that MSD would lose about $1,800,000.00 in State and federal funding if my figures are right about $5200.00 per student.

Does anyone see a developing problem here?

Yes, Middletown schools will suffer if they loose a sigificant number of students.

People are much more likely to talk about moving than they are to actually move.

According to the Journal approximately 315 students have been registered out of the district.  This number includes only the other Public school districts and not any of the private schools.

However you wish to cut it that is a significant amount of State and Federal dollars that will not be coming to Middletown.Ouch

Yes Bill they do talk about it.  I talked about it with my family for most of last fall and now my son is officially enrolled in MCS, so make that 316 that won't be returning to MSD next year.

I have two sets of friends with school aged children here in Middletown and they are both looking to sell and move out of the district.

Personally I was a little more proactive and as soon as my wife became pregnant 6 years ago we put our house on the market, sold it, and moved out of town.

It would appear that my numbers were to conservative.  It now looks like between 350-400 students will be leaving the MSD for what many believe are greener pastures.

With the new figure of $5400.00 per student going with them that means MSD will lose over $2.1 million dollars and more than the total enrollment of some of the Elementary schools.

When is the MSD School Board going to wake up, it would appear that they are asleep at the wheel here.  Their latest over the top $900.00, one of, if not the highest fees in the state, pay to play extortion attempt has only cost them more money.

Good Job MSD Admin and Board.Clap

MADISON TWP More than 80 students some "trying to get away from the Middletown situation" were approved for open enrollment to Madison Local Schools for the 2007-08 school year Monday night by board members.

Chris Cline, Madison superintendent, said most of the students transferring are "pretty good," and some may be leaving the Middletown district because of budget cuts following the May 8 levy failure.

At 81 students, this is the largest year for Madison's open enrollment program, which has grown each year since its inception, when many people criticized the decision saying students wouldn't want to enroll in Madison schools, said Board Member Todd Daniel.

The open enrollment program would not have a negative impact on the district financially because state funding of about $5,400 follows each student into the district, Cline said.

Students are not bailing anymore, there is no place to go.
