| Is the 'Buy American' provision in the stimulus plan anti free trade? Should Middletown write a law to promote Buy Middletown? Would it hurt our economy and bring inflation due to higher costs of goods? Or will it protect jobs and get things growing again? | |

Re: Buy Middletown. That was pretty off the wall. What the heck is even *made* in Middletown today? It's post industrial desolation, baby! I do favor including Canada in the goodness. They're practically the snow covered northern suburb of the US. Seriously, they would be OK to include because they have a similar standard of living to the US, IE, similar wage levels, and they trade extensively with the US already. Offshoring has gutted the US economy over the last 25 years by the US dealing with closed markets that don't want to buy stuff. We probably need a degree of new protectionism to create new jobs - trade policy has been hugely lopsided and needs to swing back. "Buy American" is not just a xenophobe's position, it's a survival tactic.

Hey, I think Jonathan has a point. How hard is it to spend more of your dollars in Middletown, Monroe, Franklin areas. Seek out all the area restaurants and go there.
Make a plan to buy your gas in Middletown. That's pretty easy. Buy your groceries in Middletown. Keep our retail workers employed. Just support local businesses, please. The job you save may be your own.

 uh----
y'all act like this BUY MIDDLETOWN--SUPPORT YER LOCAL BUSINESSES is some new concept that you just originated. Where have you been for the last 20 years? Maybe if you had supported a lot of local entities more, they would still be here today! Still--all support is greatly appreciated, and your local businesses channel a large % of the $$$ back through jobs, purchasing and community support.

| As far as the proposed provision in the stimulus bill: I think a "buy American" program coming from the Gov could be very dangerous. However a slight attitude change in the people could be very helpful in my opinion. | |

 Pacman:
I stand (actually, I sit) corrected!! The last few times I went by there, they certainly appeared to be closed.  This is great news.  My wife really likes their "grogg" blend of coffee beans, but it was too risky to go to Monroe to purchase same.  (One would have to drive by the dangerous "old" coke plant to get there. ) Thank you for pointing this out!

Never meant to imply that it had. Just saying that like almost everything else a "buy America attitude" would work best if it came from the people and not that messed up bureaucracy in Washington.

| While I don't think we should start a protectionist program in this country, we can encourage local businesses and government to buy local. I encourage all to buy from your fellow Middletown area business person. This can help infuse more money in the local economy. Its the local economy that I am most concerned about at this time. | |

Speaking of buying Middletown and supporting the local merchants- Anyone know why the city bought four pick-up trucks from Bob Ross, an out of town dealership? The Ford, Chevy, (Score-Dodge truck dealership is out of business)dealerships wouldn't give the city a good deal? Hard to believe that in these economic times the locals would not want to be the lowest bidders just to move the trucks.

| Is there room for other restaurants in Middletown. With the Barbeque Junction out of business, where can you go for a decent sit down barbque? I think any restaurant near I-75 and 122 would do just fine. | |

The Florentine in downtown Germantown has the best ribs I have ever eat.
I have never had a bad meal there. Great salads, the works.

AK's Top Man Wainscott is in favor of Buy America!
He said after a speech at Xavier the "buy American" provisions in the $787 billion federal stimulus plan are common sense.

I saw that and wondered to myself, if an issue this complex was common sense, what if antyhing would not qualify as common sense? Again IMO when the US. Gov writes that sort of thing into law it can stir up all sorts of trading problems for us worldwide. We could easily end up losing more jobs out of retaliatory trade sanctions than this could ever save. Just my two cents.
