I was remiss earlier this week in not spreading the word about the Middletown Board of Realtors’ annual fundraiser to benefit the Butler County Foster Children’s fund. Yet that might have been just as well since the event, held at Carol’s Speakeasy Lounge this past Thursday evening, was at full capacity and a huge success! Many well-known (and some not-so-well-known) Realtors served as “celebrity bartenders” with tips going to the kids. Raffle tickets were also sold, with the grand prize being a “Wii” . There were also many other donated items included in the raffle. (In fact, I won a Budweiser folding chair!) Additionally, a pair of tickets for the upcoming (12/27/2009) Bengals-Chiefs game was auctioned off. They went for $170. (Sorry, Randy and Hermes! I tried to buy them for you, but after buying 24 raffle tickets and throwing a generous sum into the “tip bucket”, I only had $ 169 in cash left on me so I got outbid.) Unlike many other fundraisers, 100% of the money from this event goes for the stated purpose!!! All labor and prizes were donated. Even though you would recognize the names of many of the folks who worked to put this together, most Middletonians never hear about it. These folks truly do “do it for the kids”, and not for their own fame or fortune. Perhaps that’s why none of the usual glad-handing publicity hounds were there trying to grab all of the credit. |

Now Mike- I know that you like Randy and Hermes and want to spare them the heartache of the real truth of what happened to those Bengals/Chiefs tickets. Since I'm a little "detached" from hurting their feelings on the Bengal subject, I'll devulge what really happened to the tickets.
The raffle folks tried their best to get as much out of those tickets as they could to no avail. The bids dropped to below ticket price to the point where they were trying to give them away free to any takers. Still no one jumped at the chance for free tickets. They had no choice but to place them outside taped to the building with a sign- "for anyone who came along" to take. Still no takers. Frustrated, they took them to one of the brightly colored pawn shops downtown in the hope that a trade could ensue and that they could gain back something of value to raffle to benefit the bottom line. Couldn't find a shop owner that would trade. Finally, while standing in front of Walmart, and with great reluctance, they found someone who eventually gave them a broken Walmart watch, a used pair of underwear and a half eaten box of chocolates in an even trade. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() Well, I sometimes joke or kid around here to try to bring a smile to everyone's day but I also advocate the puruit of the truth so I better straghten out this matter!
Here are the facts:
They actually did auction off a pair off tickets to the Bengals-Chiefs game and from the description given they were really good seats.
The value was announced as $69 each although the donated tickets were part of a four seat, season ticket package. (I would give the donor his proper acknowledgement, but I cannot recall his name.)
The winning bid was actually $170.
The rest of the true story falls somewhere between my story and yours!!!

Sorry!!! I had forgotten all about it until my wife reminded me at the last minute. It really was a packed house. I might be able to put you in contact with some of the folks who took pictures, if that's what you have in mind.
(Although I understand that the negatives of some of the pictures taken late into the festivities are commanding quite a high price!!!

Hello Mike ~ Thank you so much for your kind words about the Middletown Board of Realtors :-) The event was advertized in the Middletown Journal ( so I ws told ) I seldom read the paper ~ I like Middletown USA
![]() The Bengal tickets were donated by Peggy Kennedy and Ron Faulkner ~ purchased by Tim Lewis for $150 ~ Many people/companies donated items including Dickerson's and Miller Brewery. The Middletown Board of Realtors donated the WII ~ Susan Shane made an apron with pockets that held small little wrapped gifts ~ $1 a pick ~ I took a turn wearing the apron and it was fun ~ The Apron was a Big Hit, as well as all the nice gifts given through the raffal tickets.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THAT DONATED THEIR TIME & OR TALENT ~ The Butler County Foster Children have come to rely on The Middletown Board of Realtors to help out. Every year The Board tries their Best, to step up to the plate, to help these children. The money helps for many things, not only Christmas Gifts ~ A teenage girl or guy may not have clothes to wear to the prom, a child may not have the opportunity to go to camp.... the list goes on and on ~ In December @ The Middletown Board of Realtors' Christmas Party, a check will be presented to The Butler Co. Foster Children
![]() Thank you to The Public that joined The Realtors to help with this worthy fund raiser. The Realtors also have a food booth every year @ the Balloon Fest to help raise money for The Butler Co. Foster Children. Every penny of the Realtors' fund raisers goes back into our Butler Co. Community

Hey Mike ~ after re-reading your kind words and the fact that you bought so many tickets, I do believe you were sitting next to me ~ I asked you if you were getting hand cramp with all the tickets you bought ~ Thank you so very much ~ it was very kind of you and I did enjoy our conversation

Yes, Ms. Skeens, that was I. No thanks necessary...my wife and I try to support as many good causes as we can. We especially like the ones where every cent goes to the intended cause. Many fundraisers end up netting as little as 10% to their advertised cause, believe it or not.
However, I do dispute your recollection on the Bengals tickets. I am fairly certain that Tim opened the bidding at $150. There were some intermediate bids, and Tim was also the high bidder at $170. I was paying close attention as I was interested in snagging the tickets on the cheap for Randy and Hermes.
(Later on, someone announced that if anyone was interested, they could accompany Mr. Lewis to the game for $80. I said that I would go with him---IF he raised his offer to $200!!!

Randy ~ I thought the amounts you said, were as you said; however, I called Tim to see what he paid for the tickets and he told me $150 and I asked him if anyone took up the offer to go to the game with him and he said that was a joke

Mike and Marlayne you're both wrong. After reviewing the instant replay it was actually $160 for the tickets. I'm not going to over rule the Referee (Mike Presta). I'll throw in an extra 10 bucks. Hope you like the chair Mike.
Thanks for all the kind remarks. This is 1 Charity that my group works hard for all year. We even incorporate this as part of my other Summer event, The Broad Street Bash. All tips from the beer sales go to the kids.
Thanks Again,
Tim Lewis

Tim,
Perhaps I heard incorrectly! Now I feel bad about costing you another $10! I guess that the only way I can make all of this right is to kick in another $10 myself the next time I see you (NOT to re-imburse you, but FOR THE KIDS).
