With God, all things are possible. That's not what the democrats are saying. They've removed God from their platform.

This is the paragraph that was in the 2008 platform:

“We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential.”

Now the words “God-given” have been removed. The paragraph has been restructured to say this:

“We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth – the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us.”

"Due to the lack of interest. The DNC convention has been cancelled."

Oh, God.

I can already feel the viral emails hitting a million inboxes on this one: Christian Right journalist David Brody seems to have done a word-search of the 2008 and 2012 Democratic National Conventions and found that a reference to the Almighty was taken out of the former in the latter.

The passage in question is one of those cliched references to helping Americans achieve their full potential. Said potential was described as “God-given” in 2008, but not in 2012. Some secular-socialist crept in and removed God from the Democratic Platform!

Aside from making the rather idiotic assumption that this was a conscious act (in a purely political document why would a throwaway adjective that would offend almost no one be deleted?), Brody does not note that the platform has a whole section on “faith,” which reads:

Faith has always been a central part of the American story, and it has been a driving force of progress and justice throughout our history. We know that our nation, our communities, and our lives are made vastly stronger and richer by faith and the countless acts of justice and mercy it inspires. Faithbased organizations will always be critical allies in meeting the challenges that face our nation and our world - from domestic and global poverty, to climate change and human trafficking. People of faith and religious organizations do amazing work in communities across this country and the world, and we believe in lifting up and valuing that good work, and finding ways to support it where possible. We believe in constitutionally sound, evidence-based partnerships with faith-based and other non-profit organizations to serve those in need and advance our shared interests. There is no conflict between supporting faith-based institutions and respecting our Constitution, and a full commitment to both principles is essential for the continued flourishing of both faith and country.

So God wasn’t exactly expelled from the platform, it seems.

Now, turning to the GOP’s 2012 platform, we find a not-overwhelming seven references to the Deity. One is like the omitted 2008 Democratic Platform line, attributing talents to God. Two do the same with natural resources and the environment. Two repeat the Tea Party mantra that our rights and liberties (which they typically interpret as including the “rights of the unborn” and quasi-absolute private property rights) are “God-given,” which is their way of saying they can’t be modified by some New Deal or Great Society or egalitarian judge or popular majority. There is, believe it or not, a reference to God being the author of our right to use shootin’ irons to defend ourselves. And then there is a specific pledge to restore the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, “under God” included, in public schools.

As a believer myself, I dislike in particular the attribution to God of various secular ideas of “rights,” which are intended, frankly, to divinize political ideologies. I would, in fact, call that idolatry.

I’m very sure David Brody wouldn’t agree, but then we’re not talking about people who are using their God-given talents to fairly judge words and their actual implications.

I think it is because they want to replace God with Obama.

In Obama we trust. Not God.

"...we find a not-overwhelming seven references to the Deity."

How many do the dems have?
How many more till the number is overwhelming? Then tell me why God should be overwhelmingly mentioned in the platform. Is that the goal or is 7 just right?

Kelly, the Believer:  Drudgereport states that the DNC has suddenly had a change of heart, as such: "Tonight, the Democratic National Committee suspended the rules of the convention and inserted language regarding God and the State of Israel back to its platform. They had to vote three times to do it – and they had to lie to deem it passed, even though it was clear that the measure did not pass a voice vote in the chamber."  The DNC must believe as the famous movie quote goes: "God? We don't need no stinking  God!"  chmoore

From what little real news I've heard about the change of heart, it appears you are correct in your assumption re: the vote et al. As for "We don't need no stinking God", I personally would tend to agree with that, what with all that 'separation of church and state' mumbo jumbo...and further, Obama is the one who was upset that the proper noun "God" was left out and demanded it be inserted. There was already a loooong diatribe proffering faith and its "effects" in the language.  So much for pointing fingers at a supposed "Muslim."

Just food for thought, folks - it's good for the brain.

Paul Ryan, Fox News, the Christian Broadcasting Network, and assorted media figures everywhere seem to be fascinated by the same omission from the Democratic Party's platform.

The word "God" is notably missing from this year's 40-page document, as David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network first pointed out.

"We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential," the party's 2008 platform said.

This year, a similar paragraph instead states, "We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth -- the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us."

The Democratic platform honors religious freedom, but given the absence of the "g" word, the manufactured freak-out is now well underway.

It's tempting to delve into an extended explanation of why, for believers, God probably doesn't need perfunctory references in a political party platform, and why this trumped up story is silly, even by 2012 standards, but let's instead consider another tidbit of news.

The United States Constitution -- the foundation of our government, the basis for our laws, and a model for democracies around the globe for generations -- includes no references to God. Literally, not one.

If the Constitution doesn't mention God, I think the political world can probably keep its apoplexy in check over the Democratic platform. Unless Republicans and news organizations are going to start condemning the Constitution, too, demanding an explanation for its secular nature, let's relax a bit.

One more snack and I will go back to my Observation Deck and keep quiet. But you can talk amongst yourselves...   Smile

Fox News has fixated on the fact that the Democratic platform for 2012 does not mention the word "God," and used a misleading graphic that points out that the Republican platform for 2012 references "God" more often than the Democratic platform has in any of the last four election years. The graphic ignores that in 2000 and 2004, the Democratic platform contained the word "God" more times than the Republican platform in those years; moreover, the 2012 Democratic platform has a section on faith.

Fox has run several segments today highlighting how the word "God" does not appear in the 2012 Democratic platform. In one such segment, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) confronted host Bret Baier over the issue, saying that the network is "harping on a trifle" and presenting the Democrats as "godless people."

In a second Special Report segment, Fox aired the following graphic:

But Fox's data are incomplete: the network did not provide information on the number of times the GOP platform mentioned God in 2000, 2004, or 2008. Here's what an honest chart would look like:

honest%20chart

Well look at that. The Democratic platform referenced God more often that the Republican platform in 2000 and 2004. And the 2008 GOP platform only mentioned God twice.

Does this mean that the Democrats of Al Gore and John Kerry's conventions were more God-fearing than the Republicans of George W. Bush's? Does Mitt Romney's convention love God more than the last three GOP conventions combined? Of course not. As Durbin points out, trying to draw conclusions from this exercise is either malicious or deeply stupid.

Indeed, as Fox contributor Juan Williams pointed out shortly after Fox aired their dishonest chart, the 2012 Democratic platform may not mention the word "God," but it devotes significant attention to faith.

I find it fascinating that we actually have people on the religious front like Brody, who have such a simple uncomplicated life to have time to count the number of references to God and make an issue out of it. I also find it rather ironic, knowing the climate cesspool that was formed by the government and the dam politicians themselves, that we try to tie the "goodliness" of God to the bottom feeder business of politics. With as crooked as a typical politician is (and needs to be to function in Washington), I would think that the shear mention of goodness and God, by either party, would be laughable and taken with a grain of salt by the voting public. How trite and meaningless it is to notice how often a word appears on either party's platform. After it's all over and the smoke clears, Washington will return to their bottom dwelling ways and none of this will matter anyway. JMO

Kelly,

Is that you I saw in the Front row of the DNC jumping up and down booing whne the "G" word was placed back in the platform??  Better watch it you may come face to face with  "G" some day.

As for Durbin, he is nothiing more than a democratic mouthpiece right along with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who has become one the biggest liars of the demacratic hand selected by Obama to lead the DNC.  She has been caught so many time lying on TV that you don't know when to believe her anymore when she opens her mouth.
