Best Selling Author, Arthur Herman, to Visit Middfest |
Tuesday, September 9, 2003 3:40:38 PM - Middletown Ohio |
An unlikely and unwieldy title from an unlikely popular author came together and Middfest will welcome Dr Arthur Herman, best-selling author of “How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything In It.”
Scots and Scots-for-a-day will enjoy the very readable work produced by the coordinator of the Smithsonian’s Western Heritage Program where he teaches non-credit courses on a variety of topics at the institution’s Campus on the Mall in Washington D.C. Dr. Herman was professor of history at George Mason University and Georgetown University before leaving the academic world to write.
Dr. Herman will be on hand to meet and talk to fans several times during Middfest International 2003 which runs October 3-5 on Donham Plaza in downtown Middletown, Ohio. His first appearance will be in conjunction with the pre-Middfest Exhibit Opening on Thursday, October 2, 6-7 pm. His appearance at Middfest is underwritten by through a Grayson Kirk Distinguished Lectureship Grant and other sponsorships.
Dr. Herman’s other scholarly works, also given to lengthy titles, are: “The Idea of Decline in Western Civilization” (1996), and “Joseph McCarthy: Reexamining the Life & Legacy of America’s Most Hated Senator” (1999). His current project due to hit bookshelves next year will deal with how the British Navy built the modern global system we live with today and the bonds of commerce that link us together.
His book on Scotland, unexpectedly began to sell much better than expected due to the many Scottish-Americans who tend to be book buyers and book readers, according to Dr. Herman. Now, many non-Scottish readers have found the work very readable. Middfest International planners browsed through many books on Scotland, the featured country for the 2003 celebration of international friendship. When they discovered Dr. Herman’s book the planning began to center around his writings concerning many well-known and some lesser-known contributors to the modern world such as Andrew Carnegie, Alexander Graham Bell, and James Watt. Dr. Herman brings Scotland’s history to life and allows modern people to read history like a novel.
