Castles and Kilts to be on display at Middfest International
Wednesday, September 24, 2003 3:27:57 PM - Middletown Ohio
Visitors to the Middfest International celebration in downtown Middletown will be greeted by all things Scotch. The foods, history, science, music, dancing and other elements of the historical and current cultural of Scotland will be featured at Middfest International 2003.

One of the most popular exhibit areas is the Middletown City Building with it’s four floors of exhibit space surrounding a lobby atrium. Libby Capps and her committee will be mounting displays that include Scottish castles, a kilt maker, Scottish Whisky exhibit, an exhibit of Scottish Dance and several artists’ works.

A nationally known environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy will be featured. Several items will be included that are on loan from the Scottish National Museum in Franklin, North Carolina. A sword display is sure to be a popular area as will the fiber art show “Scottish Plaids Crossing Cultures.” Entries from artists who work in fiber will be judged and on display in the fourth floor gallery.

Craig and Barb Pierpont, husband and wife team will demonstrate how to build and play a harp. Nancy Voas, spinner/weaver will demonstrate the making of tartan plaids.

Kilts, clans, castles and 100 tartan flags will adorn the lobby. The tartan is a particular weave Americans know as plaid. Tartans are the Scotsman’s equivalent to the family crest and is a distinctive way to trace genealogy through the clans. Dr. Phil Smith, a national authority on the history of the tartan will lecture on the “National Dress of Scotland” and “Clans and Families of Scotland.”

Middfest International is a year-long international friendship educational program culminating in a three-day festive event in downtown Middletown, Ohio. The October 3,4,5 event includes entertainment, demonstrations and many ethnic and American foods. Admission is $5 for Adults. Children are admitted free.
