Edgewood School Board voted on August 27 to begin random drug testing of Edgewood High School students participating in extracurricular activities. Students who wish to participate in extracurriculars will have to sign a release form stating that they consent to the testing. A meeting will be held today at 7 PM in the Edgewood High School auditorium to provide additional information on the new policy and address questions and concerns from residents.
The American Civil Liberties Union claims that student drug testing violates Fourth Amendment rights that prohibit unlawful search and seizure, but the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that student drug-testing is constitutional two times.
