Light Up Middletown set New Records |

Even though the weather was cold and blustery and the scheduled Christmas Balloon Glow which was to have been held in conjunction with the opening of Light Up Middletown was postponed, Light Up Middletown set attendance records last night.
Opening night for the drive-through fantasy light display in Smith Park, downtown Middletown, now in its fifth year, drew 841 vehicles and 3,064 guests. Prior record attendance was set on December 14, 2002 when Middletown officially reopened Central Avenue to traffic and many of those attending that event also visited Light Up Middletown. On that night 819 vehicles and 2,786 guests visited the display.
Light Up Middletown organizers generally see a steady flow of traffic on almost every night of their month-long event, however, when another event is held downtown, the traffic through Light Up Middletown increases.
Volunteers from area organizations stop each car as it enters the tunnel of lights to ask two questions “In what county do you live? and How did you learn about Light up Middletown?” The answers to those questions help event managers plan their future advertising and promotion efforts.
According to Flo Randall, Light Up Middletown chairperson, “We hope that next Tuesday, December 2, will set another record when the rescheduled Balloon Glow will bring a large crowd to Smith Park.”
While admission is free, those visiting Light Up Middletown are asked to drop a cash donation of any amount in the box as they enter or leave the park. Donations are used to repair and add to the light display and make improvements to Middletown City Parks.
