Q&A With Middletown School Board Candidate Gregory Tyus
Monday, October 12, 2009 8:15:46 AM - Middletown Ohio

Interview By: Randy Lewis

Give us a brief bio of your academic, sports and work life.

I serve as the Senior Pastor of the United Missionary Baptist Church in Middletown for the past 16, plus years.  I was formerly recognized and featured as an Emerging Leader by the Applause magazine of Cincinnati, Ohio.  I served on the Middletown City Council (completing the term for 18 months), for the late Robert “Sonny” Hill.

I am the Co-Founder and Board Chairman of M.A.L.A.C.H.I. Inc. a not-for-profit organization that has been in existence for 11 years serving youth in Butler, Darke, and Preble Counties which administers the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) in all three counties working to employ over 250 young people.

I have been a resident of Middletown for almost 17 years, assisting and serving on several boards and committees throughout the city.

I am a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, a Business graduate of the Cincinnati State University, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.  The husband of Linda L. Reese-Tyus and together we are the parents of 6 adult children and 11 grandchildren.

Who should be president of the school board?

The presidency of the Middletown City School Board of Education is determined at the organizational meeting of the board in January.  The person that should be president will be the person whom the majority of the board, feel will conduct the leadership of meetings, represent the district at various functions; as well as work to build consensus among the board on various issues and topics.

How will we improve our results as measured by the state of Ohio Department of Education?

We must continue to build upon the work that has already begun with teachers and students, of presenting and working through a more challenging curriculum.  In addition, we must get back to the citizens of Middletown feeling and knowing that there work with and within the district is needed as well as tied to the academic success of Middletown City Schools.

How will we fund your initiatives?

I am not looking to fund any new initiatives, but I am interested in getting the correct word out about the need for support of our ending Operating Levy’s (December 2009).  Without the support of these levies, we will be unable to fund the basic operations of our district.  I plan to do all I can to be visible and vocal in the Middletown community, demonstrating our need as well as informing them of the significant budget cuts that have and will be made to be sure that our expenses remain in line with student success and achievement.

Why do you want to be on the school board?

My mission is to be: Passionate, Committed, Vocal, and Visible.
•    I am passionate because I have a strong desire for our children to succeed.
•    I am committed to working hard for our children’s success.
•    I will be vocal after listening to parents, teachers, and community to work cooperatively with all groups to ensure the success of our school district.
•    I will be visible so that I will know personally what is happening in our community.

As with city council, the school board needs to be gutted also. Unfortunately, we have no new faces to challenge the incumbants. That means we will not see a different direction than what we have now, resulting in the same low success rate that we have had for over 25 years. We need severe changes in school system personnel with radically new ideas. What the schools have been doing for the last 25 years has not been productive and has not given the taxpayer their money's worth. We keep approving levies but keep getting no improvement on system achievement. New elementary schools producing achievement has been a failure. Tyus, Andrew, McNeil and others are part of the problem. Sauter and Fiora are good starts at revamping the board. Hard core discipline needs to be brought back to the district. Lack of discipline is out of control. If it isn't working, why do we still keep the same system in place?
