Ensuing events have made portions of it less relevant, but the “essence” of it seems to apply to what I feel has become an underlying theme of this thread:

TOPIC: Taxes, assessments, lawmakers’ hypocrisy and tea parties.

Citizens of Middletown:

I feel remiss in not having initiated a “tea party” right here in our very own city in concert with those held throughout our great nation yesterday.

Not only do we have the same grievances against our ever-increasingly overbearing Federal government, including lawmakers and politicians of BOTH parties, as the rest of our fellow Americans, but I believe that we here in Middletown have the same, and perhaps even more egregious, grievances against our local government.

Our children and grandchildren are deeply in debt for projects that have served only a few, and for visions that have not only failed, but continue to be followed with no change in prospects for success. Our leaders talk only to the so-called “stakeholders” regarding how to spend public funds, without regard to the cost to us, the “bag-holders”, and our children.

We have lawmakers making ordinances that they themselves do not follow. We have lawmakers supporting the assessment for improvements of other citizens’ property even while the same lawmakers are failing to pay legal existing assessments on their very own properties. We have lawmakers proposing and supporting property tax increases while at the very same time they are in arrears on the property taxes on their own Middletown properties.

We are continually preached to about the necessity of a higher City payroll tax, yet I doubt that every City of Middletown public official and public employee that has, or has had within the last ten years, employees of their own (or has, or has had, any interest in any business entity that has, or has had, employees in the City of Middletown) could swear under penalty of law that they have been, and currently are, in strict compliance with all statutory federal, state, and local withholding requirements. Similar statements could probably be made about several local non-profit organizations and their books, or lack thereof.

The time has come, fellow citizens, and the time is now. The time is upon us. We can no longer tolerate “business as usual” in the City of Middletown. We must call for investigations into not only groups that seem to be above the law, but also individuals, and purge them from our city government one way or another, sending them to prison if we must. They must go--willingly or unwillingly--but go they must!

Those in our city government that have knowledge of such scoundrels or such scandalous behavior, though they may not directly be guilty of it themselves, but who do not reveal it or refuse to cooperate in exposing it are not innocent. If they are not with us, they are against us.

There must be no negotiations, no ifs, ands or buts. Anyone supposedly “innocent” but with knowledge of wrongdoing must come forward to help, for if they do not, they are no better than the guilty and they deserve no further consideration, no severance, no “deal” of any kind.

Middletonians, it is time to take back our city!

Then again, I may be the only one who has felt this way.

I agree with your other posts, about what action should be taken. I'm for all of the above, and have several 'hunters' I know in Columbus vet who could slay this beast in many ways. I'm ready to lock and load, or pull the arrows out of the quiver, aim, and fire. The hunter would understand that meaning well. I know many episodes which relate to your point on the beast feasting upon the one---the beast targets its prey when hungry and angry, and uses many means of attack. But, the beast also makes many fatal mistakes which could be costly. There is power in numbers.

    Author: acclaro
Subject: 2683
Posted: Feb 17 2010 at 6:09pm

The term spider used was focusing upon the waste within city hall and the school system, the ferocious appetitie, and constant cashflow demanded by the beast that wanted fed. I respectfully don't think ASJ's comments were a sign of + or - nature, it was neutral. The city council members acknowledged none had a clue they had let section 8 get so out of hand. I also don't view in the context of the beast, which needs to be starved. It needs to be diminished, but the levies and taxes need to be starved (lowered) as the beast at city hall wants to maintain the steak lifestyle it has held since the 1960's.

Its time serious orgainzation begin in this city. If a few would like to meet in a private location, I'd be for it. As for city council, and the new members, what a disappointment. I thought the new members, of which two seemed to jump on opportunities that needed action, haven't ceased the moment on the ordinance change of asphalt and infrastructure. What hat ASJ's done---nothing I've heard referenced.

Its time to starve the beast. When I was at IBM years ago when I began my career, we called the mainframe environment requiring alot of "care and feeding". That's the same with city hall---they have a big appetitite and need to have bariatric surgery to have that stomach shrunk, aka, as spider says, starve the beast---quit feeding cash that's wasted. Evan Blay's announcement he wasn't running was indicative of a system that fails when you have the same people in the same position for decades. It is killing America, and it killed Middletown. Time to purge those in office, and starve the beast called city hall.

Must be the current buzz word, originated by the Spider. Have seen the word used in several other posts on various topics referring to controlling the city's out-of-control programs, taxes and spending.

Wonder what was going through Becker, Mulligan and Armbruster's minds when she was discussing this? Embarrassment? Resentment? Denial? Disinterest? They are partly responsible for past mistakes on the lack of oversight by Council concerning this program, are they not? Guess Ms. Scott-Jones didn't win any friends among this group when she mentioned the "creation/taming of the beast".

Is this just a passing comment on the part of Ms. Scott-Jones or is this the beginning of a challenge to introduce a reduction to the current program's level of participation?

What are your intentions, Ms. Scott-Jones? If the intent is to move toward voucher reduction, don't be afraid to jump in and help her, Josh and AJ. She will need some allies to change the current misguided program in place and you both can be a factor. Choose wisely, if there is an opportunity.
