HenryWadsworth Longfellow published this poem he wrote in 1855.

Near the corner of Main Street andManchester Avenue are two small monuments on a grass median between two parkinglots. They’re visible from the street but are low to the ground and obscure;they face the space where  Elks Lodge #257 once stood at 103 North MainStreet. This was the site of the home where Victor Galbraith was born.

There are several circumstances that are in question until this day.

Underthe walls of Monterey

Atdaybreak the bugles began to play,

      Victor Galbraith!

Inthe mist of the morning damp and gray,

Thesewere the words they seemed to say:

      "Come forth to thy death,

      Victor Galbraith!"

Forthhe came, with a martial tread;

Firmwas his step, erect his head;

      Victor Galbraith,

Hewho so well the bugle played,

Couldnot mistake the words it said:

      "Come forth to thy death,

      Victor Galbraith!"

Helooked at the earth, he looked at the sky,

Helooked at the files of musketry,

      Victor Galbraith!

Andhe said, with a steady voice and eye,

"Takegood aim; I am ready to die!"

      Thus challenges death

      Victor Galbraith.

Twelvefiery tongues flashed straight and red,

Sixleaden balls on their errand sped;

      Victor Galbraith

Fallsto the ground, but he is not dead;

Hisname was not stamped on those balls of lead,

      And they only scath

      Victor Galbraith.

Threeballs are in his breast and brain,

Buthe rises out of the dust again,

      Victor Galbraith!

Thewater he drinks has a bloody stain;

"Okill me, and put me out of my pain!"

      In his agony prayeth

      Victor Galbraith.

Forthdart once more those tongues of flame,

Andthe bugler has died a death of shame,

      Victor Galbraith!

Hissoul has gone back to whence it came,

Andno one answers to the name,

      When the Sergeant saith,

      "Victor Galbraith!"

Bynight a bugle is heard to play,

Thesentinels hear the sound, and say,

      "That is the wraith

      Of Victor Galbraith!"
