Author: VietVet
Subject: 5790
Posted: Jun 30 2014 at 11:50am

"Gov. John Kasich signed into law earlier this month House Bill 362, which among other things, will allow teachers who receive ab “accomplished” rating to be formally evaluated once every three years, and those that receive a “skilled” rating to be evaluated once every two years"

SO, IF THE TEACHER RECEIVES AN EVALUATION EVERY TWO YEARS IF SKILLED OR THREE YEARS IF ACCOMPLISHED, AND IF RECEIVING A RAISE IS BASED ON AN EVALUATION, DOES THIS MEAN THE TEACHER WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A RAISE EVERY TWO OR THREE YEARS DEPENDING ON THE SKILLED OR ACCOMPLISHED DESIGNATION? IF THEY AREN'T EVALUATED EVERY YEAR, AS IN A NORMAL EMPLOYMENT ENVIRONMENT, THEY CAN'T BE ELIGIBLE FOR A YEARLY RAISE AS THERE IS NO SUPPORTING YEARLY DOCUMENTATION TO JUSTIFY THAT RAISE.

"But all “accomplished” and “skilled” teachers will still be required to have regular annual observations and conferences with administrators"

ARTICLE DOESN'T MENTION IF THIS "OBSERVATION" OR "CONFERENCE" WILL TRIGGER A RAISE.

“The previous law was simply too much of a burden, not only on the teachers but also on the administration,” said Rep. Tim Derickson, R-Hanover Twp. “They simply don’t need a formal evaluation each year. This bill allows teachers more time to do what they want to do, and that is to teach the kids. And this will allow our administrators to manage and administer in our schools.”

PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW "KID GLOVE" THINKING IS PREVALENT IN THE ACADEMIC WORLD AS OPPOSED TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR. SERIOUSLY, IT IS A "BURDEN" FOR THE ADMIN. TO CONDUCT YEARLY EVALUATIONS? THE TEACHERS "DON'T NEED A FORMAL EVALUATION EACH YEAR"? YOU'RE KIDDING RIGHT DERICKSON.

"Officials with the three state education associations said the changes will allow districts increased flexibility in conducting the formal teacher evaluations.
“While we understand the importance of conducting teacher evaluations on an annual basis, we have been hearing from many districts across the state with regard to the increased administrative burdens being placed on them in fulfilling the (Ohio Teacher Evaluation System) requirements,” said Damon Asbury, OSBA director of legislative services.
“The changes made by the legislation will allow for more flexibility without jeopardizing the effectiveness of the teacher evaluation system,” said Thomas Ash, BASA director of governmental relations"

WELL, BY ALL MEANS, IF IT'S TOO DIFFICULT FOR "MANY DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE" AND DEMANDS A LITTLE MORE, LET'S STOP THAT RIGHT NOW. WOULDN'T WANT TO OVERTAX THEM AND REQUIRE ACCOUNTABILITY, NOW WOULD WE.

MERCY.
