Author: VietVet
Subject: Young kids......Mercy!
Posted: Jul 12 2021 at 10:26am

Had a nice young man stop by in the neighborhood soliciting registered voters to sign a petition. It appears Shaddocks Pizza is going for their Sunday liquor license. Doesn't bother me that they want to expand their business capabilities so I signed. We struck up a conversation because I was interested in where young people are as it relates to the current state of affairs in the country and, specifically, the unemployment handout from Biden that seems to be preventing workers from pursuing the multitude of jobs open now. He told me that many in his age group are not pursuing jobs now because the pay is too low to start. I asked him how much he thought he should be making just walking in the door with no experience. He told me more than what is being offered in the $10 to $13/hr range. He thought it should be more like $15 to $20/hr. I suggested that was a tad bit too high for flipping burgers behind a grill or taking an order at the register. He told me the employers should pay a decent wage that would supply enough money for a nice lifestyle making the house/car payments with some leftover deposable cash to prevent living from paycheck to paycheck. I told him what I encountered in my 48 yrs of working and I told him good luck finding that situation as the employers need to make a profit to invest back in the business, satisfy the major stockholders and to create new jobs with pay and benefit packages. He just didn't get the concept so the conversation ended quickly. Tell me something...Why do these young people feel so entitled to freebie handouts and not think they have to work from the bottom up to attain more money? They all want to be the boss just walking in the door for the first time. Incredible crap they have been fed. In short, what the hell is wrong with these kids nowadays?

The second fire seems to be started in a garage by yet another homeless person. Time to bulldoze the site isn't it Middletown before someone dies there. Knock it down, haul it away and clear the lot for yet another green space in the city. No other options is there? It looks bad as you enter the city from the south on Rt 4. I know you are obsessed with the appearance around your downtown area and this should help your cause.

    Author: VietVet
Subject: Downtown Business Reboot
Posted: Apr 13 2020 at 4:26pm

I know spider, I know. Just get so frustrated at seeing stories supporting the dam downtown area acting like the other parts of town don't matter. Concentrating on just the downtown and ignoring the issues in all other parts of town is a road to disaster for this city.......and they don't see that????

Just wondering what they are looking at sometimes. Sit in the Kroger parking lot at the Towne Mall location, look south toward Lowes and north towards Meijer and notice the traffic flow on a given normal day (pre-non-corona virus day that is). Then go downtown and watch the difference in traffic flow sitting at Don's Pizza (or anywhere) on any day and notice the difference in traffic business attraction. There is no comparison. Yet, because the city leaders are so enamored (maybe so beholding???) with the downtown business owners, (and because we seem to be loading up on council members with downtown business owners), they place all their eggs in one basket.

History repeats itself......

The city leaders in the 70's made the same tunnel vision mistake when they relied on Armco/AK at the time for the city revenue and didn't replace the paper mills that were closing by finding more industry to replace them. Now, not only have we lost the paper mills, but are now dealing with the decline in revenue from a drastically downsized AK Steel, that has since gone under new ownership. The city literally lost it's revenue base right before our eyes and the city leaders just sat and watched it all happen back then. The same is happening right now in a different context. What is the matter with city leaders who can't see what this city needs to prosper......or don't they care enough to do something about it? What the hell happened to competent city leadership since the 60's. Like society as a whole, city leadership has gone downhill the last four decades with non quality individuals who just want to warm a council seat and with no future visions.

You're right......it still doesn't matter. Sad to know.
