MIDDLETOWN — More than 80 people were arrested Thursday in Middletown as part of a massive warrant sweep through the city.
Eighty-three people were arrested and 99 warrants were served on charges ranging from drugs to failure to appear in court, according to Middletown police Chief Rodney Muterspaw.
The sweep — conducted by the city’s police department and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from U.S Marshals — should show Middletown residents the department is “serious about cleaning the place up,” he said.
“We are really happy with the success of this warrant sweep,” Muterspaw said “Our goal was to serve as many as possible on those who have been evading court or jail, and we did just that.”
Both felony and misdemeanor warrants were part of the one-day effort, and now the Middletown City Jail is full.
“It’s full, but that won’t last. Not after they start going before the judge,” Muterspaw said.
Muterspaw said the warrants were those outstanding from Middletown Municipal Court and included everything from drug charges to failure to appear.
More than 50 law enforcement agents — 20 police officers each from Middletown and the sheriff’s office and 16 U.S. Marshals — began serving warrants at about 7:30 a.m. until just after 3 p.m.
“We really appreciate working with the sheriff and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and we are excited to have this partnership with them,” Muterspaw said. “We plan on doing even more together in the future.”
Thursday’s arrests demonstrate how effective policing efforts can be when personnel and resources are combined, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.
“Criminals don’t care about jurisdictional lines, and I look forward to working future operations with Middletown and other local police departments,” he said.
Earlier this month, the Middletown Police Department joined the regional narcotics unit operated by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.
Middletown’s five-officer Special Operations Unit will lend manpower to the Butler Undercover Regional Narcotics Taskforce (BURN), a multi-agency narcotics task-force operated by the sheriff ’s office.
“Our Special Investigations Drug Unit will not lose any staffing with this change. We actually will be stronger now,” Muterspaw told the Journal-News when the partnership was announced. “This is a crucial time in our city for this because now we will have not only have our own drug unit, but ties to two others regionally to combat drug trafficking in Middletown. Being in two counties and directly in the middle of I-75 puts us at a disadvantage. This opens major doors for us in a big way.”

Remember the last big sweep Middletown police did with help from other agencies? That time I think it was 13 cars with officers from Middletown police, sheriffs deputies (surprised that Sheriff Jones had anything to do with this) and state highway patrol driving through crowds of citizens (including children) on the grounds of Douglas Park. And the crowd was told by heavily armed police in swat gear to disperse immediately!!! The great crime they were trying to prevent was the fireworks display on the Fourth of July! Those criminals were using a professional group to safely set off the fireworks, but did not have a permit from the city of Middletown (even though Middletown did NOT at that time have a “fireworks permit” to be purchased). Those criminals were about to enjoy a fireworks display for the sixth year (I believe) without a permit.

The city was fully aware that the fireworks display event would take place as usual. A simple phone call from the city to the organizers would have sufficed if the city had any objections.   There is NO justification for the city’s violation of our citizens civil rights to peacefully assemble, not to mention endangering lives (including children’s) when confronted with a fully armed swat team!!! We look like a police state. As usual its the honest, innocent citizen who suffers at the hands of our regressive (to medieval maybe caveman times) city government. Remember, anything considered “quality of life” will not be tolerated by our city officials in Middletown!

This reminds me that after our thoughtless (except for selfish purposes), brain dead council destroyed our swimming pools, building inspections required a $600 permit for a blow-up pool in your back yard. Well, . . they had to pay for the demolition cost of our pools SOMEHOW! Simply trying to keep your child happy and comfortable in the summer heat will not be tolerated in Middletown!   Remember when Barbara Castell made children tear down a snow fort (basically a pile of snow) because they piled it up without a building permit? Think about it . . . I’ve said they had their heads in the sand but it might just be worse!

A sweep that ACTUALLY gets criminals off our streets would be appreciated, but too often in Middletown its the honest citizen that can not follow the nit-picking “rules” spewing out of the city building who is fined and hauled into our kangaroo court!! Remember that if you want to bring in a business or jobs, if you want fireworks, a blow up pool or ANY “quality of life” items, they will not be tolerated in Middletown under the existing regime. Of course, if you’re willing to pay outrageous prices for permits and have inspectors (looking for some infraction) crawling all over your property, you can have a baby pool. But since Middletown has a very low average income, not many can afford the exorbitant additional expense.

And here’s a “final thought” (that’s Adkins’ own phrase) for Mr Adkins and Council:
How many major drug dealers, murderers, rapists, robbers or other REAL criminals were captured during this sweep?   And how many of the 83 warrants served were for MISDEMEANOR offenses? We would like to see by the numbers what the majority of offenses really were.   In other words was this effective against major crimes or just padded numbers using misdemeanors (like failure to pay some petty fine levied by building inspectors) to make it look good? Middletown IS the highest crime area in the state, third highest in the country!

Why do sweeps? Why not arrest them as soon as possible. Doesn't a sweep this, with a net 83 new court, cases swamp the court and the jail?

I'm sure there is a good reason.

As for the results of the sweep?  I say A+

Thank you for your comment! I agree that any such positive efforts to combat Middletown’s criminal climate should be commended, though I wouldn’t call this one an A+. This is my admission that the criticism expressed on the previous post MAY be somewhat extreme. But it was so difficult to resist making the comparison to a similar use (but MISUSE) of organized forces . . . specifically the 4th of July, Douglas Park incident. That was a glaring example of an UN-AMERICAN action taken by an out of control city government that took a threatening stance which you’d expect to see in a police state.

And yes, you are correct, why aren’t the police taking action and arresting more CRIMINAL offenders at the initial point of encounter? That would solve the crowded jail problem. Another point to make is: The city concentrates much more on enforcing it’s maze of EXTREME nit-picking building code ordinances, and often uses them selectively against our ordinarily LAW-ABIDING citizens. That keeps the court busy with MISDEMEANOR fines when they should be concentrating on the CRIMINAL element. Again, how many misdemeanor arrests were part of the latest sweep?

Thank you John Beagle!!! This blog is the only forum where citizens can freely and openly air their concerns about our city’s condition. We can have a debate or conversation and exchange ideas here. That’s something that the city council meetings totally lack.
