A reminder that we have the operating funds for the pool through 2009, but do not have maintenance funds for 2009.  I believe that we spent about $15,000 in 2008 for maintenance activities.

If we are going to keep the pool open beyond 2009, we will need a major push and funding source for both operations and maintenance.

Jonathan- a dollar more in everyone's water bill allocated for the pools ought to do it. Can everybody afford a dollar on a one time basis to do maintenance at the pool for 2009? In the mean time, where's Merrell? He's good at these things.

Vet--the pool needs to raise the # of users this summmer or give it up. After the first moderately successful season, #s disappointingly dropped last year. Sunset Park has undergone a wonderful face lift due to the volunteer efforts of a very gifted group. If the pool and park can't grow this year in the heat of summer and a renewed park presence, then it may well be time to pull the plug(which would be very unfortunate after refurbisishing the park).
Once again--the public makes the REAL decision here........
Use it or lose it.

Hello everyone

After reading all your posts for the last number of months I thought it was time to jump in.
I've got a variety of opinions about a variety of topics and I'm seldom shy about speaking my mind on things I have real knowledge of ....  Not being the best of speller's I'll do my best to make myself understood. I'm not sure what real value this blog has on the community but I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you all. I'm not here to insult anyone nor have the same toward me..... I just want to learn as much as possible about everyones take on the issues in town and possibly draw new or better informed conclusions. Obviously I've had some luck with the Journal as a visiting voice and I look forward to more of the same. Possibly I can better give voice to issues that concern us all through that window of opportunity. I'm here on the pool segment because I have a specific grasp of the good, bad & ugly about this topic. ....... Let the games begin

Spider,
Is it possible that part of the drop in attendance at the pools is because of the drop in population in the city? I don't know. I was just wondering?

Paul,

The drop of attendance had to do with the fact that last summer it rained for twelve weeks in a row starting the last weeks of April. The summer temp averaged  for  May, June, July. was approx 76 degrees. August was the warmest with 78. Also it rained for for eight weekends straight  If you read the Journal article a couple weeks ago about  Weatherwax ... there reason for not meeting their nut was declaired the same as Sunset. Their are still about 2000 kids out there from the middle to lower economic strata who have no where else to get wet or learn to swim .... Lot's more info if anyones interested.....

Merrell

A grandmother took her two young grandchildren to the pool several years ago for morning swimming lessons. She later took them for an afternoon swim and was really upset with the actions and vulgar language of some of the teenagers. She never took them again.

Vivian, I don't know hoe long ago you reference is to, but yes there were problems the first year with teenagers and drive throughs but last year the city assigned an officer for patrol and the pool staff was much less tolerant about that kind of behavior. Look forward to a good summer.

Let me boil this down to the basics before I get attacked by a “newbie”.

First, to keep this public pool open requires an act (or many acts) of charity by the public, not by the government. It is NOT the province of government to confiscate money (via taxation) FROM the poor to then give that very same money to others that it deems more “worthy”. Government should encourage charity, but not try to practice it. If donations and admissions alone can keep the pool “above water” (excuse the pun), then fine--keep it open. However, if public funds are required, Sunset pool must go the way of Douglas. It may be sad, it may sound cold or cruel, but it is a fact we must face. We cannot afford this extra while municipal necessities are beyond our means.

Also, Mr. Wood points out that Sunset pool is used primarily by “2000 kids out there from the middle to lower economic strata”. Consider the following statistics:

Yearly paid admission at Sunset Pool

1993: 24,438
2004: 11,284
2007: 10,410
2008: 8,461

Now do the math. Even assuming that those 2000 were the ONLY ones using the pool, it would mean that they used it on an average of TWO afternoons per week, in the VERY BEST CASE!!!

People, I have been a supporter of keeping the pool open for the less fortunate kids, and I remain so…IF it can be done strictly by private funding, but I believe it is time for our tax money to be reserved. We just cannot afford it.

“Mulligan said he ... doesn’t believe they necessarily make the return on investment necessary to keep funding them.” …The Middletown Journal, January 30, 2012
