Taken from the March 7, 2010 Middletown City Managers Report
Our Fire Division tracks squad runs by general category and we cannot, without some analysis, determine which runs could be diverted from the ER. The Fire Chief confirmed that more access to health care in underserved areas will reduce the runs to the ER both by having access more available so that conditions do not become acute and by having a facility nearby that residents can access without calling the squad.

Someone explain this to me because I'm having a realy hard time reading between the lines.
So are they saying that when you call 911 that they can make the determination whether or not you actually have an emergency that requires transport to the ER ??
Sorry I just don't get it.

With the construction of the new health facility behind the clinic on Ninth Avenue, some citizens that would normally dial 911 may opt to go to the new facility. If citizens choose to go to this facility instead of the Atrium, run volumes would decrease for the fire department.
Before someone starts yelling something like "firemen don't do anything but sleep and play cards, why should they want their run numbers to go down?", not everybody transported by life squad is a "true" emergency. Toothaches, stubbed toes, earaches, etc. are not that uncommon. If the department has to call a mutual aid squad from Monroe because just one of Middletown's squads is on a run that is not a "true" emergency, citizen safety is comprimised.
Middletown Division of Fire will transport anyone requesting treatment at the ER. The only exception is the patient who routinely abuses the system and the department's Medical Director advises the department not to transport that patient.
911 operators decide which service you need, police, fire or both.
Fire away! (No pun intended)

There was a rash of fires set in our in our neighborhood. I told my wife that I hoped it wasn't arson or daughter.

Mike,
If you tried fire fighting for a while, do you know that fire fighting is a distinguished career choice?
The three wise men searching for baby Jesus were fire fighters.
The Bible said they came from afar!
