A Journal story telling us about a parade and ceremony took place yesterday. The "March To The Mailbox" for the 2010 census. Dignitaries and notable people in our community took part. Ms. Scott-Jones (photo opt) and Mr. Smith were present as well as a Middletown drum corp. Mr. Mulligan missed an opportunity to read a proclamation declaring it "Middletown Census Day" and had a government rep there to give them the key to the city! Must have been a sight! Yes sir.....Middletown is full of surprises and always captures the essence of mega-entertainment value!
(Girls Gone Wild was another monumental event) Journal filler, perhaps?
Guess this is the only news in town until the council or school board does something "noteworthy".

Hermes- apparently, the city folks want the census to show the feds that Middletown is a poor community comprised of people with low incomes with many people per household to support, which will bring more fed dollars to Middletown for road repairs (surely to be diverted to the General Fund, redistributed for special pet projects and used for forbidden areas again) This will be especially effective as the city leaders entice more low income folks to fill out the census. Remember.....Middletown has a bright future (on fed handout dollars as the sole revenue generator!) Whoops......until the next administration which will pull the plug on the handout program. Then, we'll see how they plan to generate money to operate the city and will be entertained to see the "deer in the headlights look" on their faces.

"Middletown has a bright future (on fed handout dollars as the sole revenue generator!) Whoops......until the next administration which will pull the plug on the handout program"
Or until the well of using other people's money runs dry at the federal level. Huge deficits cannot be sustained indefinitely. Sooner or later, it will come time to pay the piper. Declining tax revenues due to a sluggish economy will exacerbate the situation. It is entirely forseeable that the malaise that has hit Greece with its European-style socialist government and economy will manifest here in the United States. Only there will be no European Union to bail us out.
Middletown needs to learn to stand on its own. But there has been very little effort upon the part of the city fathers. The attitude is that "If we don't go for the money, someone else will." Over and over, you hear the remarks made at city council, "I want to do what's best for Middletown." And then they vote to accept this federal grant or that one. Is this what is truly best for Middletown? They never seek to come up with viable solutions, only a continued reliance upon federal and state funds to be pumped like an intravenous transfusion into the gangrenous body of a city that does not know how to take care of itself.
What happens when the money runs out?

Middletown can no longer stand on its own. They have created a city that 1) relies to heavily on the Federal dollar as you state. 2) They jump at any hint of a pie in the sky plan i.e. the Train stop, with out much thought and 3) they have created a significant percent of the population that relies on welfare, charities, handouts, etc.
Middletown will lag far behind any recovery when it comes to this area by years for these very reasons.
The Ivory Towers sense of priorities are ass back wards. Protect the employees jobs downtown, Tax the Citizens to the poor house and continue to provide little to no services.

wasteful- and that's why we must:
1. gut city council and replace with people who will do the correct things (correct priorities) to repair the damage done by this and previous administrations. 2. After gutting and replacing council, those same council members must develop a program to start the elimination of the poor performers and the people responsible for the current state of affairs in this town, starting with the city manager, law director, planning director, econ. dev. director, finance director, and others. (Remember to budget Greyhound bus tickets, one way, out of town for these people) 3. After the purge, direct the new administration ( after careful screening of applicants to determine whether they've "got their mind right" (Cool Hand Luke style) to start the weaning of the need for fed dollars with a gradual reduction of Section 8, make the town LESS ATTRACTIVE to welfare/ghetto candidates, placing the funds in the correct places within the city budget, emphasize street and infrastructure repair, decent paying (non service oriented) JOBS- JOBS, I said JOBS, and back to basics needs for the city. The fancy "luxury" amenities can come later when the city has it's act together. Will take a long time to do all of these things, unfortunately. JMO |
