2,300 Code Violation Letters
Several people that received these code violation letters applied for the city low interest loans to help repair their property and all were rejected. Others were told they received too much money by a few dollars. The churches are run over with request for help from senior members and others to make the repairs on their homes. These are the same churches that are having problems keeping enough food in their Food Pantry to feed the hungry. And then we have the problem of all the empty houses sitting all over the City with tall grass, peeling paint and trash all over the yards. These empty houses have become dumping grounds for others peoples trash and tires. What do we do about these properties that have been waiting to go to the block for years? What if one of these houses is next to yours? I do understand that the City leaders want Young families struggle to feed their families and employers are cutting back on hours and jobs. How will they afford these repairs? I think this will become another PR nightmare for the City. |

I have to agree with you vivian. Has anyone noticed the "abandoned" Jiffy Lube shop on Breil ? Talk about an eyesore.The grass is hip high & it looks like a dump.I wonder if the owner recieved a letter from the city ? Why hasn't the city mowed it ? I guess some rules apply and some don't.

The last time the city used code violations to clean up the city was a sweep of the downtown businesses. That sweep resulted in 160 code violations "that ranged in severity from bare light bulbs to a stain on a ceiling tile". I remember one business man that was cited for a smudge on linoleum. These businessmen all had to pay at least $100 fines plus court cost. Most of these violations were in back rooms or basements that were not open to the public, so getting them corrected did nothing to help the appearance of Middletown. This also was to help Middletown and not about the money. This exercize was picked up by the business community all over SW Ohio, making Middletown the joke of the area plus helping Middletown get the image and reputation that we now have.
Since this "clean-up" Middletown lost over 10,000 jobs even before the economy tanked. We still have the well deserved business unfriendly reputation, and can not get businesses to open or move here even before the bad economy.
The inspectors will start on our businesses soon, so expect to see this same situation to play out again. Only our city government would think that doing the same thing over would result in a different outcome. Isn't there a saying about someone that does the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome?

HUD HOUSING REHAB FUNDS AVAILABLE TO AID MIDDLETOWN'S PROPERTY OWNERS SLAMMED WITH PUNITIVE HOUSING CODE VIOLATIONS???
After reading all of the disturbing stories of waste, mismanagement, conflict of interest, etc., how much HUD money does the City of Middletown really have left to help elderly, disabled, unemployed and other economically devastated property owners? It's a proven fact that hundreds of thousands of dollars have been wasted...no, millions of wasted taxpayer dollars. And, now, a campaign is underway to smear the reputation of the one person who has tried to bring all of these "little problems" to light. Go figure??

We have at least 3 "pride" groups in town. All have the theme of taking on projects to improve the appearance of the town. If the city won't contact the owner of the Jiffy Lube (Hermes- I saw the same high grass when getting a Subway on Saturday afternoon), and have them cut it or cut it and send them the bill, why don't one of these groups load up the weedwacker and lawnmower and chop it down? How about these groups collaborating with each other and tackling some projects for the elderly/job loss folks to same them from taking out these low interest loans? Seems to me that the churches are doing their fair share by providing food for folks. How about each group taking on a section of the city and pick up the trash at these abandoned houses? How about it Ms. Mort and others??? Couldn't be worse timing to start harassing the people. Typical non-logical thinking from these
 's. They only see what they want- they don't see (or care) how what they want impacts others. CLEAN COUNCIL'S HOUSE IN NOVEMBER!!! THEN, CLEAN OUT THE CITY BUILDING!

Code enforcement inspectors have started hitting the streetsBy Ed Richter | Monday, May 25, 2009, 08:54 AM Property owners who received one or more of the 2,300 notices of various violations from property code inspectors from the Middletown Community Revitalizaton Department can expect to get another visit if they haven’t made the necessary corrections and notified the city. Interim Director Doug Adkins said last week that it is hoped to get many property owners to voluntarily address the violations noted during a survey of city neighborhoods earlier this year. However, over the next several weeks, the goal is to make 200 to 220 contacts a week to ensure the corrections are made. The follow-up effort started last week. The city has outlined the various aspects of the property maintenance code and has arranged for discounts from local businesses to help property owners and have posted other information on the city’s Web site, www.cityofmiddletown.org. Adkins said there were violations throughout the city, but the violations were concentrated in the western and southern sections of Middletown. For more information, contact Adkins at 425-7938 or 425-7939 at Middletown City Hall. |

MORE NEWS ABOUT DELINQUENT COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION DEPARTMENT DELINQUENT HUD REHAB LOANS - THANKS TO A VERY BRAVE STAFF MEMBER FOR SENDING
As of 11/28/2008 there were 16 additional HUD-funded housing rehab loans that were in arrears. The total balance owed was $337,542.95. Six of these accounts ranged from 13 to 30 months past due. It sounds like there's something fishy going on down there at One Donham Plaza??

Just curious- does the city have to report the progress on payments of each loan they make using HUD money? IE- How often does HUD contact the city to review the applicants and the loan repayment progress? If there is little contact by HUD or only periodic contact, perhaps one armed with this info. should contact HUD about the delinquencies on the city's behalf, of course! As Dean Wormer said in Animal House- " we need to find out what those sneaky little shi-s are doing down there".

Seeing how there are in excess of 1000+ homes, according to realtytrac.com, in some stage of forclosure, auction, bank owned etc. in Middletown. This seems like a tempest in a teapot if you ask me.

HUD - COLUMBUS "MONITORING" VISIT IN JUNE
City Councilman Tony Marconi told a friend that HUD will visit Middletown in June. According to my friend, this is the first visit of its' type in at least five years if not more!
I'm told that a "Monitioring Visit" is NOT an audit but a only a random sampling of contracts, financial records, etc. I'm further advised that it's nothing like a true audit conducted by HUD's Office of the Inspector General.
My contact says that HUD - Washington, D.C. is becoming increasingly advised of unusual happenings in little old Middletown. Stay tuned. I say that we need to be sure that the Dayton and Cincinnati media is made aware of these happenings!

According to a check of Butler County records this afternoon, one of Middletown's many delinquent HUD residential rehab loan recipients is $13,000+ in arrears in property taxes. How is this possible???

No, they are not. But as of January 2009 they worked at One Donham Plaza. They were one of the five or six that had private debts paid off with HUD funds. Some one we both know refuses to write anything about this or other disturbing matters.

Clarification -
This delinquent tax payer is not a City Council member. Instead, as of January 2009, they worked for a department located within One Donham Plaza. I am told that this employee was working elsewhere at the time of their HUD housing rehab repayable loan, deferred payment loan, and payoff of debts (consolidated into the City loan) at no or low interest.

This "monitoring" visit isn't thorough nor often enough to accomplish a thing. The city can convieniently hide the real incriminating evidence in this type of visit. This is not what we need. The audit needs to check every detail of this operation and cite major discrepancies. Hopefully, depending on the seriousness of the violations, we will see someone in this city government go to jail.
 How much "advisement" does Washington need to get their lazy rears over here to check it out? If this city HUD thing eventually blows up in their face, we won't need to contact the local media- they'll already be here. As to city employees owning HUD property and being in such close proximity to the HUD services within the same building/system, is this bordering on a conflict of interest situation or at least making it "very convenient" for them to get their approvals for loans or having their tax delinquencies"overlooked"? Looks like they take good care of their club buddies on this too. CLEAN HOUSE! Oh,and Richter- Wake up bud and get on the winning side here!

I can't understand the city offering low cost loans to fix property when the majority of people are UNEMPLOYED. What part of I don't have the money to do this because it takes every penny to buy their groceries and barely make utility payments . I know several who are laid off looking for work with no luck I've even given to a few of them .
When people have too default on these so called city loans which one of the so called LEADERS is going to pounce on their property . As I've said before oits time to put that bunch in the unemploymenline along with the less fortunate so they can repent for the sins they have put on our little city and citizens .

Fellow Americans and Middletonians--Cox News has no interest whatsoever investing the resources towards investigative reporting in small town Middletown. While it would tremendously increase readership and newspaper sales(not to mention pressuring the Council/Admin to act legally and properly), it would be outside of their core direction and fundamental reason for infiltrating this right wing pocket of a very crucial election state. Cox is here to change thefront page headlines and editorial pages in their area acquisitions. They are here to break down the Republican stranglehold day by day with their editorial page shift towards pounding us daily, weekly yearly with the far left point of view(ie.--all Republicans are horrible--everything was Bush & Co.'s fault--Obama is the saviour--the Dems are wonderful--things are getting better already!(the biggest con job of all).
Cox is here to draw more votes to the left, pushing Ohio to being a swing state for the left instead of pushing the Republican right over the hump.
Ed Richter and Lauren Pack are the only quality reporters on the staff currently, and they can't challenge/research everything. We need Cox to bring back Wells and Greber, then turn them loose to probe into local procedures and Admin activities. Same with school policies and test score results and trends.
Will it happen?
I doubt it.
Our local newspaper will continue to be non-controversial, more regional in coverage, and shrink in size even more. Cox doesn't want to be here, but their political agenda is forcing them to continue for a while longer.

Spider- might be time to start our own "Middletown Citizen's Voice" newsletter featuring important articles that are contained in this very forum. IF- IF we had the readership of the majority of the people in this town, this site's info. could serve as ammunition for a local newsletter. If people care enough about their town, they can simply read info. from here and forget the Journal to get the truth. If serious, given that we already have the subject matter here and all it needs is to be organized, how would one publish and distribute this info.? (And at what cost?) Would it be worth it or a waste of time due to apathy? Since Cox doesn't care to rock the boat, we must care and not only rock the boat but try to sink it to change things.

Vet first you have to have a Paper worth reading. My wife brought home the MJ yesterday and I asked what the hell this was as I didn't even recognize it as a newspaper. The whole paper couldn't have been more than 20-25 pages and had been drastically downsized. I wouldn't even waste my energy using it as a fish wrapper. Now I know why I refuse to pay anything to read or advertise in the MJ.

Pacman- I agree. Because the Journal is such a poor newspaper, I was suggesting that there be an alternative (newsletter taken from the subject matter talked about here on this site). We canceled our subscription to the Journal a year or two ago after taking it for over 20 years. They call periodically wanting us to renew and we tell them the paper is worthless because it offers nothing but out of town wire stories from other cities. The Middletown stories are not opinion balanced. Who gives a crap what is happening in Mason, Fairfield or Hamilton (unless it involves Middletown also) The stories are not written with any investigative work at all. Like you, I'll read the Journal for free but I'm certainly not going to pay for it.

I'll not bore anyone further with my comments about what has (and is) going on inside One Donham Plaza.
I've tried to do the right thing by informing the public about matters that should be of great interest.
I wish the good people of Middletown well, but fear for what the future almost certainly will bring to our once thriving community.
In the future please support those who put their jobs and personal finances on the line to ensure that good government exists here again.

While going to Lowes today I drove past the AK plant inside the fence right by the roads the weeds were 2 ft high. I decided to drive the peremiter to see how bad it was all down Lefferson and Briel up Oxford state road to Yankee It was the same. I can't believe our leaders would send letters to citizens and AK gets a free ride on the weeds and grass.
If that were a senior citizens home or some one disabled they would be threatning them with suponeas for non compliance. Its time for the Slugs on council too go and the citizens too take back our community in Nov. I bet they will say something about AK invoking a green program and protecting the environment and wildlife is why they aren't Mowing. Come on city leaders if its good enough for us to mow its good enough for AK or are they
lining a few pockets down town.
