Topic: Casino for Downtown or Maybe a Quasi Casino Posted: Nov 14 2007 at 12:20pm |
That's what Kentucky voters said in the last election.
They of course have a new Governor in KY partially because the former governor refused to even allow the issue of gambling to be voted on.
As my co-worker said when he saw the pictures "It does look a lot like Middletown but it's probably not looking any worse for having the casino there".

Hey .308 trying to debate whether it looks better than Middletown or not. I am no big fan of Gambling but I do think it beats a Compressed Gas Station with Minimal Employment.
I use to live 5 minutes form a HardRock Cafe Casino, never set foot in the place. If gambling came to the area I would probably go but it wouldn't be the highlight of my week. The problem is you have all that money leaving the state on all sides, Its time to keep the money in OH.
You can't continue to operate Ohio and Middletown on Levies it will just not work. I have never seen a state that operates on a system such as this.

If you are interested here is a series of photos I took last weekend while in Metropolis Il.
As stated above the Harrah's Casino there is only a riverboat but it's still a pretty large facility and when you drive through town you have to wonder where the tax money has gone.

That's funny you mention the Burns family, as I was down in KY again this weekend, and my father the gambler and retired Burns employee, mentioned how the Burns family was hoping the hospital would have located on their land. He will be thrilled to hear the news of a potential casino their. Going back to sleep now. LOL

BREAKING NEWS: Monroe casino back on table
Monday, November 12, 2007
MONROE The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of West Seneca, Okla., still wants to bring gambling to Monroe.
The tribe has approached the city to amend its existing agreement to reflect a location change in the property that it wishes to build a casino on, city officials said.
The tribe has apparently entered into an option with Berns Family for a parcel of land it owns bounded by Interstate 75 on its west, Greentree Road on its north and Union Road on its east.
In 2005, Monroe voters approved letting the city go forward with an intergovernmental agreement with the Shawnee that would share between $17 million and $53 million in electronic gaming revenue with the city for a casino complex proposed for Monroe's Corridor 75 Park, a site southeast of Interstate 75 and Ohio 63.
Last November, nearly 57 percent of voters said no to a constitutional amendment that would have allowed slot machine gambling at nine sites in Ohio, according to election results from the Ohio Secretary of State.

Just to come clean I personally can not stand gambling. That goes for casino, poker night with the guys, lottery tickets, or even an office sports pool. Its not even a religious or a social issue with me. Its just personally I feel that betting real money on anything takes the fun out of it.
The Irony here is that I dont think the state has any business telling us we can not have full fledged casino gambling in the first place.
So all that being said I could see myself going either way for a casino in Middletown. It would just depend on the specifics and how good it looked for the community.
P.S. Last week after my post I made the Metropolis / Middletown analogy to my 80 year old father, who lives down near there, he replied they are nothing alike. I asked him why and was told that he would not afraid to be in downtown Metropolis after dark.

That doesn't seem to be the outcome in Bangor, ME where the average yearly income is $29,000.00. The same was said about the lottery many years ago. If Middletown continues to operate on only what its poorest citizens can do or not do, we might as well lock the door and hand the key over to the State now. Why prolong the agony?

Most people think the casino approach is a great shot in the arm and in resort communities it has a viable ecconomic model. However where gambling does the most damage is among those who live from paycheck to paycheck, those least able to afford this kind of "entertainment" for they are not looking for some idle fun, they are looking to dig out of their situation, make the big easy hit. What usually happens is that they end up with less than they already had and the pain for them is a great deal more.
With Middletown's ecconomic demographics a casino would be a very poor choice as an ecconomic recovery vehicle.
Just my two cents, now a quarter of a cent due to the devaluation of the dollar.....;-)

In 2004 Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia combined took in approximately $1,000,000,000.00 in Tax Revenue from Gambling, with West Virgnia leading the way with the highest tax revenue.
