According to Forbes magazine, Middletown is one of the top cities that is recovering quickly from recent economic woes. Ranked at number 55, Middletown was just one of three Ohio cities on the list. The others were Dayton and Columbus. Ironically, Forbes named Middletown one of the fastest dying cities earlier in the year.

This isn't completely correct. It's the Cincinnati-Middletown MSA. This MSA includes parts of SW Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
It's not specific to the City of Middletown. http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/19/cities-recovery-unemployment-lifestyle-real-estate-top-ten-chart.html?partner=relatedstoriesbox |

Yeah John this is the MSA Cinci-Middletown, which includes over 2.25 million people and parts of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky. Probably would have been number 54 if they didn't include Middletow,

Mr. Beagle, I couldn't resist responding to the 'half glass' full post. The Forbes article firstly, referenced this area from Cincinnati up to Middletown (as southwestern Ohio). Middletown's inclusion has nothing to do with progress and the previous Forbes rating. Furthermore, the ranking was in the middle of the pack, with the worst cities the one's that were extremely pricey and inflated prior to the financial meltdown. Virtually all of the state of texas was in the top positions, and Harrisburg Pa. was much further up in rank, and its hardly a beacon for economic development (Tyco there and State government). The factors included state government presence (stability), and other factors. I'd disagree that being at the midpoint meant anything when comparing all of the Cincy suburbs, Indian Hills, West Chester, etc., that Middletown was in "recovery" mode. With all due respect, you must have had lunch with Ann Mort when you posted that, as you are spinning that a turn around occurrred. Do you honestly think the Forbes article was wrong? If so, drive down Rosedale, knock on some doors, and ask the home sellers trying to sell their houses for 5 years, how things are loking up in the steel town.

I think as long as Middeltown keeps getting fed money thats the only recovery I see happening. Perhaps that was the intent. The biggest percentage of our failure has to be handed to our DC rep down in West Chester. John Boehner is enjoying accolades from the people south of Middeltown while it sits idle and is slowly going deeper into the poverty abyss. Where is Boehner ? Why haven't we heard something from him ? Has he decided to distance himself from us since stealing the AK headquarters ?

Hello everyone I'm new to the forum. I've visited the site for awhile but never joined until today.
Hermes, I'm not sure Boehner had anything to AK moving. I believe AK made that move on their own without recruitment from West Chester or other elected officials. I think the Oxford Press article below will substantiate my memory. |

Hermes maybe you need to ask your city leaders just how much they have communicated to Boehner. It is not Washington that has taken stimulus money and built bike paths. It is not Washington that requested 1662 Vouchers. It is not Washington that has not maintained the infrastructure. It is not Washington that sits by and watches the schools decline. It is not Washington that turned Middletown into a Poverty zone. It is not Washington that can't support local businesses, due to a lack of disposable income. It is not Washington that can't say NO to anymore Low Income housing, etc. Need I go on?
These are all local issues created by the Locals Officials and Politicians and Not Washington.

Welcome to the board Observer !
I understand the need for the move,a newer building, technologically updated, and actually a better location and more exposure. I would almost guaranty that Boehner played some part in the move. A company like AK doesn't do something for the heck of it and they don't do it for nothing. Sure the new building was the main attraction but no doubt taxes played a part as well as any amenities offered to them at the time. Give them enough time and they'll relocate some where else. It's all water under the bridge now anyway but I blame Boehner cause I don't like him anyway. Give me a reason or a cause and I'll blame him.

Why AK Left"
"Our new corporate headquarters will provide AK Steel with state-of-the-art technology, including advanced computing and communications capabilities that are necessary to improve our competitiveness," said James L. Wainscott, AK's chairman, president and CEO. "It will also facilitate more convenient face-to-face interaction with customers, suppliers and other important constituents.
"Additionally, the move will assist us in attracting and retaining top professionals, who desire proximity to the abundant amenities and services available in the West Chester and northern Cincinnati area," Wainscott said." |

Wasteful - That whole statement from AK cracks me up.
I don't blame them for moving,I would want to move too if my office was located deep into the poverty zone of a one horse town and almost 100 years old. But to dish out a line of political jargon like that is very comical.

Hermes you are like so many other Middletonians who don't understand that generations change. People don't want what Middletown is offering don't you get it, or must pictures be drawn. People want a different lifestyle than Middletown offers. They want more for their Children than saving the dilapitated Theater on Central. they want more for their children than a school system which is failing. And yes they want choices other than Olive garden, Applebees and Golden Coral.
Persoanlly I think a large part of Why AK moved was due to the image of Middletown and I doubt there was anything that Middletown could have offered AK to stay.
The problem with Middletown is it's people only think within what they have brain washed themselves to think, that Middletown is all there is.
There is no desire in this town to improve the town or the life of it's children or residents, there is just a malaise to continue on as you all have for the last 30 years. That is sad and the worst part it is your children who can not even make choices for themselves they will suffer the most.

thoroughman yes we need that, but we also need a citizenry that needs to change their mindset to today and the future, rather than what was the past.
