Took a drive downtown this morning to see the new "open spaces/infinite view" theme. Noticed the remnants of the old Dohn's Hardware sign on the blue building on Broad. Now that Swallen's, Sorg ( great view of the water treatment plant by the way with Sorg out of the way), the parking garage and half of the downtown has been knocked down, I can't wait to park in one of many newly established parking lots that will be provided. I'll get out of the old car and go.......no wait.....not shopping, not to eat.....to look around and wait for the new artzy thing to happen, some place to eat to open or the new train to show up at the station, I guess.
 Might be a long wait. 
Thanks city leaders!  It looks better totally leveled. It also looks a little "desolate".

What are the long-term plans for the rubble and properties left behind after these demolitions? Is it common knowledge?

Miss Vivian and I have "speculated" about "hypothetical" City staff master re-use plans for the demolished Municipal Parking Garage and Swallens Building property. We've also considered the City-owned acreage immediately East of Verity Parkway (across the street from these now cleared properties).
When/If the City Hall staff discovers HUD/other funds to abate asbestors/demolish the former Strand theater, they'll then have two more large parcels of vacant land separated only by Vail. With demolition of the Woodworking Shop on Vail, is it possible that they'll seek abandonment of this lightly-used street?
Is it possible that the City Hall staff have plans to use HUD funds to subsidize redevelopment of the Swallens/Parking Garage and other semi-adjoining City-owned property running northerly from Central Avenue to Manchester?
It sure seems that new mixed-income rental housing on these City-owned properties could be a possibility.
This is only speculation.

Great photos, 409, I feel like I witnessed it myself. I'm sure if was fun to see the wall sections topple and the blocks crumble apart.
Swallens never was the most attractive structure, but oddly the contract view of the before/after makes the before look much cleaner. Maybe once they get the site totally cleaned up and some trees planted on the Swallens open space, things will look better.
I'm hoping for a row of trees flanking the new surface lots on the former garage site. The rear of the buildings fronting Central and the side of the YMCA are not too attractive.

Is anyone else surprised how quickly and easily the garage & Swallen's came down? It seemed like it took forever to tear the old YMCA down because of the way it was constructed.
If anyone remembers, the YMCA tore down their old building because they wanted open parking. Now they are in a sea of parking lots. Middletown should market a slogan of "(empty) Parking lot capital of the world" or something like that. |
