Americans for Prosperity-Ohio commends Ohio's House of Representatives for passing a budget in House Bill 153 that includes a repeal of Ohio's Death Tax.

"Ohio's House showed bold leadership today in passing a repeal of Ohio's job-killing Death Tax," said AFP-Ohio State Director Rebecca Heimlich. "If we want Ohio to be competitive in attracting and keeping jobs, we have to stop driving investment and prosperity out of the State with our antiquated Death Tax. As I travel across Ohio, I hear of many who have left the State to avoid being taxed when they die."

Most states do not have a death tax, and of those that do, Ohio's is arguably the worst. It has the lowest exemption rate of any state. Families are sometimes forced to sell their small business or family farm to pay the tax.

“We are a free nation, and people are free to choose where they retire. Some of our best and our brightest have left the Buckeye State to best preserve for their children what they have earned. This tax is immoral and is levied again on post-tax assets that were already earned,” said former State Rep. Seth Morgan, AFP-Ohio’s State Policy Director. “This isn’t a matter of timing or state and local revenue, this is a clear matter of competitiveness, keeping jobs in Ohio, and ultimately right and wrong.”

Ohioans recognize the devastating effect the Death Tax has had on our economy, and 83,000 of them have signed a petition to end the Death Tax. In response to an Action Alert AFP-Ohio sent its members, just in the last two weeks more than 22,800 emails and faxes went to Ohio's General Assembly and/or Governor asking for an end to Ohio's Death Tax.

These Ohioans will be watching closely over the next several weeks to make sure the repeal of the Death Tax remains in the Budget and is passed by the Senate. AFP-Ohio urges the Senate to pass the repeal as part of the Budget.

Ending Ohio's Death Tax is a key objective of AFP-Ohio's project called "Ohio 180°- Turning around Ohio today." Ohio 180° is a grassroots effort aimed at making sure Ohio takes the tough steps necessary in 2011 to turn Ohio around and get us back on track to prosperity.
