MIDDLETOWN—

Middletown City Schools Superintendent Sam Ison will provide updates on the district during a special community event.

“State of Our Schools: A Community Conversation” will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 8 at Triple Moon Coffee Company, 1100 Central Ave.

The event is open to the public

Ok Ison, when will the meeting be held for public participation for the vast majority of people who work during this time slot? This tactic seems to be used quite a lot by council and the school board when they know they may face some opposing viewpoints. It was also a favorite for John Boehner and his staff when they were attempting to represent us. Schedule off hour meetings and then claim to give people an opportunity to participate.

Is this yet another avoidance technic used by the schools to eliminate the opportunity for the really tough questions you may have to field with most who are not satisfied with your performance in your schools?

How about trying something new and step up in answering the difficult questions for a change and make an attempt to give on-point answers instead of deflection comments that do not address the questions.

Might be a refreshing approach for a change.

Journal article concerning Ison's retirement announcement.....

Excerpt....

"Ison joined Middletown Schools six years ago as director of instructional leadership, supervising the district’s school principals.

Prior to that, Ison was principal of Lebanon High School in Warren County for 15 years. He has spent 38 years working in public education.

In 2015, despite reservations from teachers union members, the Middletown City School District board of education unanimously approved the retirement and rehiring of Ison.

At that time, Ison agreed to return for $120,000 a year and eliminate his 5 percent bonus. The contract approved in 2015 was for three years with a possibility of a fourth year.

In Middletown, Ison has pushed for upgrading the district’s school buildings and learning technology. As district leader he has overseen the start of the biggest and most expensive school construction project in the city’s history."

If you will notice, no mention of Ison's academic contributions, programs or attempts to help the poor academic record in the Middletown schools. No mention of his attempts to upgrade the indicators still stuck on six met out of twenty-four total. No mention of the schools still stuck at Continuous Improvement for over a decade. No mention of the bottom dwelling state test scores in all grades and all categories reported yearly. No mention of his contributions toward better relations between the teachers and the administration within the district.

Only new buildings are mentioned as to his accomplishments. Apparently, it was not important for Ison to raise the academic performance part of his job responsibilities. The school board has failed us again in not requiring the super to perform in the academic category as they did in the "building new facilities" category. They keep building new Taj Mahal-like schools and still maintain a failing performance factor proving new buildings do not guarantee improved educational performances for the kids and the residents of this community.

And so the lie prevails and the people are still enamored with mediocrity from this school district. Why?

Goodbye Mr. Ison and good luck in your pursuit of future endeavors.

Like Price and the rest of the former superintendents we have had in the last three decades, it will not be difficult to remember your contributions while you were here. Zero is an easy number to recall.
