Well, I think what the Sheriff was saying is that we need to have at least one armed person in every school. Middletown High School may have an armed police officer, but none of the elementaries do are probably the majority of the schools in the state don't. I think it is a good idea to have a police officer at every school, though this would increase police budget tredmendously. I don't like the idea of any other school official having a gun. I don't think school officials, no matter how well trained, can take the place of a police officer. Students may be less likely to commit school shootings if they knew a police officer was just down the hall; but if the vice principal has a gun most students probably won't even know about it and it will not deter them at all.

Sheriff Jones exposes himself as a nut in the fact that he did not suggest we give educators guns as a deterrent, but rather as a way to stop shooters after the violence has already begun. Prevention is what should be focused on. One or two students is not an acceptable loss.

Allowing teachers to carry a handgun makes sense to me. The argument made above that this is a reactionary measure as it does not address the prevention aspect of the situation is not well thought out. Violence and many other unfortunate things will always happen no matter how hard we work at prevention. However to only focus on prevention and not take action that could potentially minimize those situations is negligent. |

What's next, passing guns out when you board public transportation?
