I am so glad that this project is finished or is it??  Has anyone driven on Breiel since the road work has been completed?  Why is there a Crack all the way down the center lane from Manchester to Riverview on both sides?  It looks bad and come spring when motorcycles ride on there they will have to use the other two lanes or risk getting stuck in that groove.  Just wnated to see if anyone else noticed it.

You are exactly correct (although you exaggerate slightly about the motorcycles for the time being LOL).

The asphaltic concrete pavement was not properly placed abutting to and compacted with the adjacent pass.

Now City Hall will probably say that this is because we didn’t pay enough tax and thereby forced them to lay off all of their inspectors, but if you drive around the city you will see the same defect in many other streets. You will also notice that this is exactly where water accumulates, penetrates into the pavement, and in the winter, freezes and expands and then thaws and contracts. It is these “freeze-thaw cycles” that weaken the pavement and result in pavement failures that are the ruts you describe that motorcyclists fear. This is the cause of the long, narrow pot holes that we experience in many of our streets.

The proper fix is hand placed hot patch material followed by compaction with vibrating roller. This should have been done immediately, while the adjacent course was still hot.

The minimum now should be crack-sealing... Anything to prevent the infiltration of water will help, but it should be done before the first hard freeze!

Would it be prudent to make a call to the proper department at city hall to report the concerns before the new road becomes like all the other roads in town? Perhaps they are already aware of the problem and are in the process of correcting it. They may have already sent the Director of Street Repairs or, at the very least, the Asst. Manager of Road Services (or their assistant) out to inspect the job for defects. Sometimes, I like to give our city government friends the benefit of the doubt and offer encouragement on a job well done.   

Mike- could it be a new drainage technique that is used here? If the crack is in the middle of the road, and the freeze-thaw cycle causes it to buckle, heave and rise, wouldn't the middle be higher, hence, making the runoff from the middle of the road to the sides? Great innovation!
