then they will have to sell drugs to make up the difference :) If I could I would clean the area up for free, but then I wouldn't be getting the job offer, just jail time. I don't live very far away from there and I am tired of all the bs. But honestly it is going on all over the place in the US. The "war on drugs" doesn't really exist. If all the drugs disappeared, the police would get less funding.. so they " have to" keep some around to justify their funding.

So basically crime does pay... So now they can have a regular job and also sell drugs at the same time, making twice the money they were doing before. I am pretty sure that rewarding crime isn't the way to make things better.

It will be interesting to see how long these drug dealers stay out of trouble in this program. Hope it is successful, but you must excuse my skepticism until such time as I can be assured that they mean what they say. Just have some doubts at this time. How closely will these individuals be monitored and will we all see some follow-up on this or will it just "go away" if they are in trouble again so as not to tarnish the program's image with the public? IMO-Valid, skeptical, cautious questions.

The Drug Market Intervention team has been quite busy promoting our initiative to improve neighborhoods in Middletown and have been quite successful in their efforts. Thanks to the efforts of our Police Department, Middletown Prosecutor’s office and the Community Revitalization Department for all of their hard work!
At 6:00 p.m., Wednesday evening, November 18, in the City Council Chambers, the Drug Market Intervention team conducted the call-in for non-violent drug offenders. Deon Hunter, age 18, and Marquan Cook, age 18, along with two juveniles, were presented the opportunity to rejoin the community as law abiding productive residents of Middletown. They were given until Friday, November 20, 2009, to make their decision and report to the Middletown Police Department to complete the program paperwork. On Thursday, November 19, Middletown Police Department conducted an undercover sting operation in the target area to arrest drug users who frequented the target area to make felony drug purchases. This sting resulted in the arrest of several more individuals. All four of the dealers offered a second chance at the call-in, returned on Friday, November 20, 2009, to accept our offer of assistance. An assessment of their needs was completed and supportive resources are being gathered to assist each participant with their own particular needs. The Drug Market Intervention team is appreciative of the community support for this initiative. Working together we can make a difference in our city one neighborhood at a time. Success in this project will be measured in several ways. First, does the open air drug market in this neighborhood stay closed? Second, does the level of drug related and violent crime in the area decrease over time? Third, is there a displacement of activity or do surrounding neighborhoods also see a reduction in crime? Fourth, do our neighbors in the target community feel safer? As time progresses, we will be revisiting these questions with the help of Michigan State University to measure these items and interpret our results. The exciting part of this intervention is that if it is successful, as it has been in other cities across the Country, the intervention can be replicated over and over in other Middletown neighborhoods as needed.
