In the days before we had leaders that would do something so silly as branding our downtown an "Art District"... LOL

Alot of this article was still accurate until the 1970's. Then, papermaking started to dwindle, and Armco, at the time, started to get away from steelmaking and started it's course of overdiversification into oil and high risk insurance ventures that carried over into the 80's. They never recovered. The town's leaders during this time apparently didn't see a need to add diversity to the city, relying on the 9000 employees of Armco to drive the city's money flow and finance the city's improvements. Now at 3000 or less, AK isn't able to drive the city anymore and because of the poor judgement of the city leaders the last 35-40 years, we can't seem to recover and find a new identity. No one running this town is smart enough to find the answers or direction for any success. Who/what do we want to be as a city and what direction do we want to go to get there? Well city leaders and Council? It's in your court and it's been far too long since anyone was dynamic enough to get us going in the right direction.

Thanks past and current city leaders!
