A great day to be gun owner, the Supreme Court ruled today June 28, 2010 that a Chicago ban on hand guns is a violation of the Second Amendments right to bare arms.
By David G. Savage, Tribune Washington Bureau
Reporting from Washington — The court rules in a 5-4 decision that Chicago's ban on handguns is unconstitutional, extending the 2nd Amendment's protections to the state and local levels.
The Supreme Court reversed a ruling upholding Chicago's ban on handguns Monday and extended the reach of the 2nd Amendment as a nationwide protection against laws that infringe on the "right to keep and bear arms." The 5-4 decision appears to void the 1982 ordinance, one of the nation's strictest, which barred city residents from having handguns for their own use, even at home.

Now the way I heard it on the news was they said "Every American has the right to own a gun BUT cities, towns and states can still rule on bans". And as for Oak Park ban the case would go back to the lower courts for a decision.
So apperantly once again the media has put a spin on things no doubt.

Living here in Chicago I can tell you this is a shallow victory for gun owners. King daily (da mayor) will make it next to impossible to ‘legally’ own a gun here. Already daily and his court of jesters (local city lawmakers) are making laws to get around this ruling. daley said the city would have in place a new ordinance aimed at making it difficult to purchase and own a gun in Chicago. Just look at DC, since the ban was lifted in D.C two years ago, just over 800 guns have been registered in city. The relatively low total comes as the district passed the slew of new requirements that also include being fingerprinted and taking ballistic tests. At least 40 people were shot over the last weekend across Chicago, with eight of them slain, according to police logs. I thought Chicago had the strictest gun laws in the nation.....how are all these people getting shot if it's illegal to have a gun in the city? Don't they know it's against the law?
